phalanxes are awesome

All that phalanxes do is save you from building one spearman to protect them. You usually end up building that spearman by accident anyway because the two look so damn similar!

(P.S: I too like phalanxes:))

Anything that turns axemen into something even more powerful is an excellent UU in my book. When it even turns Aggressive axemen into something more powerful like it does in Alexander's case, it just stops being funny.

Hahah. I started with Civ1, and oh yes, I'm intimately familiar with :spear:

The phalanxes of Civ1 beat battleships, bombers, and tank charges regularly. Makes it hardly worth teching past the Wheel. The phalanxes of Civ4 are somewhat less of a tour-de-force.

Mediocre post. The mediocre UUs are the ones you never end up using. Phalanx aren't in that catagory.

Phalanxes are mediocre in the sense that there are many, many better UUs. Of course you end up using the phalanx because when it becomes available it is one of the few units you can build, and axemen are the bread and butter of ancient war. That being said, the advantage that you have to build no spears to defend your stack is nice but nothing too stellar.

What about the free March promotion? I personally haven't had any experience with the Phalanx, but it seems like that would help with large-scale axe rushes?

If they got a free march promotion, they would be a top tier UU.

Yeah, Phalanges get even higher odds of that happening, because of historical reasons (Civ1) :)

Phalanges... aren't those like fingers?

I lol'ed and then got serious.

I said it again because it is true.

This is one UU I feel like is more effective in AI hands. I find they rarely mass chariots and attack, usually waiting for swords/axes. On the other hand chariot rushes are fairly common amongst us tricky humans, and this gives them an easier counter.

yeah they're pretty cool bro

except for everything else

Why were the phalanxes changed from their Vanilla 5 str spearman implemantation anyway? Sure, it's kinda neat to have ancient Greek armies composed of these hoplites, not these brutish axes, but the Vanilla version was more useful.
