Philadelphia Project: Does anyone actually believe this?

Tassadar thats an excellent reference site, Im sure I'll refer to it often in these science threads:goodjob:

That's an excellent site Tassadar. I had forgotten the details of Hertzsprung-Russel diagram and now I can always look it up. The section on telescopes is very nice too.

I also finally had time to read thru the paper you posted yesterday. Very Interesting.

I read about this in a book. But then the book decended into how the people who worked on this experiment had their brais sucked out by the U.S government, and then inserted into another body

Cool i didnt know what was that HR diagramm, you made me look at my own link :goodjob:

So we can conclude that even the most powerfull magnetic field cannot teletransport a war shipe through space time, magnetar doesnt appear and dissapear, human artificial magnetic field are far from beeing that strong. We cannot even create a magnetic lensing with our mean.

I think the argument was that the electric field bent the fabrick of space, much like folding a map, and drawing a line.

Betazed,

There is one thing that still intrigating to me, can you help me with this,

Consequently, the ultra-magnetized vacuum -- which, according to quantum mechanics, seethes with virtual electron-positron pairs and other particles -- becomes birefringent like a calcite crystal, capable of distorting and magnifying images ("magnetic lensing"). X-ray photons traveling through such strong fields readily split into two, or merge together; and many other novel physical effects come into play. Because BQ lies between the field strengths observed in magnetars and in ordinary radio pulsars, this new physics is important only in magnetars, making the theory of magnetars especially rich and interesting. Effects like magnetic photon spitting cannot be measured in terrestrial laboratories, but may be detected in emissions from these unique cosmic laboratores.

What mean ''birefringent" it is not in my english-frencg dictionary, and also dos that mean that photon are effectivly bend by ultra-strong magnetic field ?

According to Dr. Duncan ( link) it drive the vaccum itself unstable, does that equal to bent fabrick of space ? i dont think so, but space is some how affected by it.

Dont forget that here, we are talking about ultra-strong magnetic field, several order over what can be reach in our terrestial environement.

@Tassadar;

Birefringent means having more than one refractive index as shown clearly here.

So the statement that you have quoted seems to say the virtual electron antielectron pairs that are created owing to vaccuum fluctuations precess at the speed of light in those strong magnetic fields (that is not hard to understand) and hence this renders the vaccuum birefringent (How that part happends I am not sure.)

Hence you can imagine if vaccuum is birefringent then one part of it can have a different refractive index than the other part. So two collinear photons moving slightly aprt from each other can have their paths refracted differently and hence their paths can cross. Once again this theory seems to say that very strong magnetic fields changes the refractive index from zero to some finite value and changes it in such a way as to vary from place to place. If the theory is correct that such ultra strong magentic fields can bend light.

:goodjob: Betazed Thanks,

What make me very curious now, is if those phenomena can happen at 10*15 gauss, what happen at 10*50 gauss ?

Quote,

Although magnetar fields are strong by most measures, they are weak compared to the strongest possible field that could theoretically exist in nature, which is 1049 - 1053 Gauss. A field stronger than this would literally break down the vacuum and decay, via the quantum mechanical process of magnetic monopole creation.
