I lost my civilization 4 CD and I wanted to know if there was some way to play it without the CD. I have a PC and the game is already installed and it has the v1.7.4.0 Patch. I looked up how to play it w/o the CD and I got these instructions:
1) Install Civlization IV - Full Installation.
2) Apply the official Civilization 4 v1.7.4.0 Patch.
3) Replace the original CIVILIZATION4.EXE file with the one from the File Archive.
4) Play the Game!

The only problem is I don't know how to complete step 3. Could anybody help me out?

It should also be noted that Beyond the Sword is, in the opinion of many, a better game than vanilla Civ 4.

beyond the sword 3.19 does not need a CD, and has much more than reg Civ IV, and most mods are for BTS too

It was only after I lost and before I recovered my Civilization disk that I found out that BtS could be played without the disc. Warlords and vanilla Civ4 could probably work but I have not tested them out yet.

I don't think you need to replace the EXE -file manually. Download the latest patch and install. The installer will replace the EXE -file.

For Windows you can use Daemon Tools Lite, a free program that makes an image of your dvd on your hard drive and lets you access it like an optical drive. Perhaps there is an Apple version of that, or if there isn't there must be a similar solution.

I am running BtS 3.19 on my OSX machine and I cannot play without the disk. I have tried various fixes but none work :(

3.19 only makes the Windows version disk free. Aspyr did not include that feature in the Mac version. You have to use the disk to start the game but you can remove it if you want to as soon as the disk check is over and the game starts up.

The best solution is to just buy the Civ IV Complete package on Steam. I think I got the whole thing during one of their crazy 75% off sales for $15 or so.

You don't need to Steam's version. I got CivIV Complete from Target (a retail store) for $14.95 a year ago.
