Play now or Customized Game

Allways use custom even if most games I actully dont change anything its just easier to work with.

I usually use custom games, but most of the time I play games run on this forum or GOTMs.

I've always used Play now. But recenlty been starting through custom. I've been starting to play few games without huts and events to see how it is. I like the huts and events though, so I had not much reason to not use Play now. Also use custom for choose religions. Tired of seeing Hindu and Budda as main religions all the time.

I definitely prefer custom games. I like adding at least a couple more civs in, for one thing; if I play on a huge map, I'll go up to the game's maximum of 18. I also like the "Choose religions" setting (for flavour) and the "random personalities" setting (for a slight increase in difficulty without moving up a whole level). And, finally, I play at Marathon speed, which I would find intolerable without taking advantage of Advanced Start so I actually have something to do for the first 100 turns other than pressing ENTER continuously.

I wouldn't mind seeing an advanced start series.

BOTM24 got me intrigued in era starts. I assume you mean the point based advanced start, but either one offer some welcome variety.

Can you elaborate on the advance start issue? I just curious as to how that work. Wouldn't that give you an advantage over the AI?

What advanced start does?
Yes, Nares, I mean the point-based advanced start, not starting in a later era.

Soundwave, AS gives you a certain number of "points" which you can use to buy things like techs, workers, units, improvements, cities, population, and so on. Also, you see more of the map to begin with and therefore have a little more knowledge about where to place your city/cities.

Yanner--AS may or may not give you an advantage over the AI. I would agree that a human probably makes better AS choices (given some knowledge of the game and experience). However, in most of my AS games I am still well behind the AI in points, techs, population, and land to begin with and must struggle, as usual, to catch up.

If this is a concern, you can always lower the AS points so you just have enough for my main purpose, which is to have some things to do each turn; if you have just enough to buy The Wheel for roads, a worker, and 1 or 2 exploring units, that should be enough to keep things moving along in those first hundred or so long, sometimes tedious turns on Marathon speed.

Does the AI benefit from the AS as well?
Of course! It starts with the same additional purchase points & options and expanded view of the map. The AI seems to have a preference for purchasing a second city (sometimes even a 3rd one) and/or population, in my experience. I myself will forgo a second city in order to snag an extra tech.

A couple of other things worth remembering:

  • You can only place two units (scouts, workers, work boats, etc) in any AS city. So if you only have one city, you can only purchase a maximum of 2 units. Units popped from a hut next to your capital count toward this number.
  • However, you can buy as many workers and settlers as you can afford.
  • If you play as a Creative leader, the borders of any cities you found during the AS session expand instantly. Other leaders can purchase an instant border expansion, but it ain't cheap.

I think Play Now takes more clicks to start.

Custom Game. Easier to work with, also I like choose religions option and sometimes no random events. Honestly, dont remember when I used Play Now last. Five years ago maybe...

I always use "play now". I don't forsee turning off huts or anything, and I like the standard settings.

You get standard settings in custom game if you used it the game before. Everything's the same except the leader, so you if you want a standard game you perform two actions: select leader, click ok/start game/whatever it's called.

If you do play game, I think you have to select difficulty, leader, and maybe the map and speed, and ok it each time.

I have always used Custom Game
*Choose Religions.
*Add more Civs, usually 1-3 more on a Standard or large Map.
*Faster, set all options from once screen.
*Consider other options too, such as Permanent Alliance.

The only down site is the nice little graphics in the Play Now screen.
