Playing as a Continuous Civ- A HUGE Mistake

'In poor taste'? In the game in which we participate in the oppression, annexation, and slaughter of entire cultures, fictionally speaking?
Niall, in 7's model, all cultures IN THE WORLD are oppressed/annexed/slaughtered when 1,200 years pass and you suddenly become a different culture

I think to claim that the game is doing this when it expressively doesn't really flavour much of the details of the Transition at all is a great example of reading into something.

"but they had to have"

I mean, it could've been a peaceful assimilation. You can debate the likelihood of a fictional scenario until the end of time, but it could've been.

(also, I just want to poke a small amount of fun at using "1,200 years pass" and "suddenly" in the same sentence. The dissonance is that players feel that it's sudden, not that it's actually sudden in terms of historical representation)

I think this is where the idea just totally loses me.

Essentially it's boiling down your civ to a name and a badge.. and maybe one small age specific bonus (though it would probably need to be generalised across all the ages, so just one bonus across all 3, because there is no such thing as Antiquity America)

I honestly cannot get my head around the idea that people would not play Civ 7 because they don't have the ability to play the above way. I find it completely baffling. This version of the game vs 3 distinct layers that are built upon each other into a coherent end game, I just don't see what the appeal is.

The argument that 'I just want to play as America' across all 3 ages just doesn't land for me either. You could do that, it's just that instead you are taking a native route or maybe a European route to visualise what that looks like. In the end then, it really just comes down a name and a badge.

At least for me the unappeal in civ switching is not just one thing.

One is the blunt way it is done, every civ needs to change at the same time instead of something more dynamic where civs would change in different times and ways, and some might not at all. This is the fault of three ages I admit.

Also it is handled in ugly way, you basically get booted to menu screen where a new advanced era game starts.

I think the sports analogy works well here, it is like a classical team of long traditions like Arsenal FC would suddenly change their name, kit, home stadium and chants.
The emotional part of playing a "team" in Civilization that struggles and triumphs thru eras doesn't land for me as well as in previous games.

Another thing is that civ switching makes you to memorize again another set of new bonuses and uniques for you and for other empires, in a game already too bloated with new bonus and new yields from many sources.

I dont need to have a new set of buildings and units each age, I like the Civ VI/V way of less uniques and abilities but more memorable and strong.
"I had an amazing Portugal game" , "What is your favorite Japan strategy", "Venice is fun", these
kinds of discussions were to me more interesting.

This is the first time where I am not excited when a new first look video drops, it is just for some civ you play only for third of a game anyway and is not even lead by own leader.

Where's the dedicated fans playing? Last nights peak was only 8580. It would seem that Civ 5 & 6 has far more dedicated fans.
You just quoted a number that is a portion of the dedicated fan base. Just because 7 doesn't have (as yet) more players than 5 and 6 doesn't mean 7 doesn't have a dedicated fan base.

If there was such a large dedicated fan base. Wouldn't they be playing the game? Civ 5, a game that came out over 15 years ago, is getting double the number of players than Civ 7.
Go on Steam and set the reviews to "most recent". The 1st 4 reviews that come up are all negative. Also the very 1st review that comes up mentions that he doesn't like the Civ switching.

"Crowds" as such don't "play" Civ. Dedicated fans of the series play it and keep it alive.

"Dedicated fans" were too few to keep a game like Civilization alive

And what is a Dedicated fan? Because i have been playing Civilization since 1 and i hated how they changed the game for VII and think they should change it to go back to the roots of what made Civilization great. Civ switching is a Humankind mechanic, not a Civilization one

This new entry did a lot of damage to the franchise, the worst they can do is to keep being stubborn and try to keep their failed "vision"

Wow, looks like this has become a reality. It goes to show how the inputs of individuals on this forum aren't really taken into consideration by the developers.

The inputs of individuals on this forum are taken into consideration by the developers.... however
1. The individuals on this forum aren't the only thing taken into consideration by the developers
2. The individuals on this forum NEVER, EVER agree completely on anything. (especially this)

Also, what the individuals want are not necessarily things that can happen with the snap of a finger. Some things were probably easier (like adding in the 10-turn countdown for an age, base yields of buildings on age transition, etc..), some things took a little work but they got there (continuous vs regroup), and some things obviously take a lot longer (civs out of age).
