He's an American hiding out in France because he ran rather than face justice for the drugging and rape of a young teenage (13 IIRC) girl. That's why you should care.
As regards the OP, I would -hope- more care seriously about Polanski and want to see him returned to face retribution.
As a "law and order" advocate, are you interested in justice and fairness? Or merely technicalities when they happen to be in your favor? Do you feel the same way when a known murderer is freed on a technicality?
A large enough time has gone by so that a conviction is problematic to begin with. Still, he should have been extradited, and he should have faced trial.
Was he? It was so long ago I forget the details. And that really is why Polanski isn't considered so great a villain. It's not that he's not, but rather that memory fades.
It's complicated, but my understanding is that he was convicted, fled before serving sentence, then filed some appeals which were all denied. So I think as far as the US is concerned, he's convicted and hasn't served his sentence.
