School deems hot cross buns 'offensive'

IPSWICH, England, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A school in England has decided that hot cross buns are religiously offensive, and demanded the supplier start making them as simply cross-less currant buns.

Traditionally served at Easter time, the buns have been around since 1361, when a monk reportedly made small spiced cakes stamped with the sign of the cross, to be distributed to the poor visiting the monastery at St. Albans on Good Friday.

Head teacher Tina Jackson of the Oaks Primary School in Ipswich says that might offend some religious minorities like Jehovah's Witnesses, who are not allowed to worship things of a pagan nature.

But the Rev. Haley Dossor told the Suffolk Evening Star political correctness has gone too far.

"All religions have particular traditions, habits and customs and this is one of the traditions of the Church of England," he said.

One parent who asked not to be identified told the newspaper it was an absurd move.

"I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. Since when have hot cross buns been offensive?" the parent asked the Star.

Since when do people worship bread?

It's silly and stupid, but I fail to see the big deal. Someone whined to the food department and they had it changed to make them shut up. Not a big deal in my mind.

Erm, I'm a bit confused over the use of the word "pagan" in that article. It's a cross, not Thor's hammer.

But they're trying to stop people from eating HCBs!

Where's the fun in one those buns if you can't pull off the white bit or eat around it?

Stop whinging and use it for opportunity. Now that there is a market for Hot Star of David buns I can seize to corner the market myself. :D

I was confused by that too; Jehovah's Witnesses claim to be Christians, so even for them the Cross would not be a pagan symbol.

Ok, this quote makes no sense whatsoever. I've had a Jehovah's Witness is one of my classes who refused to stand for the national anthem on the grounds that it would be 'worshiping' the Canadian flag. :dubious:

And 'pagan nature'? It's a cross! You know, like the one Jesus was executed on... And it's such an arbitrary shape too. What's next, ban triangles because there are some in the Star of David? Ban curved lines because they might resemble the symbol of Islam? :crazyeye:

So do you advocate rolling-over everytime one person complains?
Not always, but in a trivial case where someone keeps calling up and whining about the way something is frosted I'm not going to get angry when someone rolls thier eyes and tells the distributer to change thier order.

Guaranteed to give you a healthily large belly; be nice or you'll find those radical Buddhists terrorists attacking you. :mischief:

I am absolutely fed up of people who go out of their way to be offended at absolutely anything.

Let them be offended, it would be good for them.
