I think one of my noob biggest problems, which isn't on the list is money. It took me many a game to realize that money is a big part of the game. It doesn't appear like it because it is not glamourous like combat or science but it is vital for researching, luxuries and many others.

I really liked Sadu's rankings...should be helpful for our upcoming PBEM!

You need to win at a higher difficulty level to get the best rating. At emperor I always get the top rank.

Hmm I thought it had something to do with the beauty of your palace :)

Why is that then? Or is an upgrade to your palace only so you know your people are happy with you?

The option to upgrade the palace happens when certain milestones are reached. For example: when you build your first wonder, when you win your first battle and when you get your first WLTKD. There are others but I can't think of them right now.

The ranking at the end of the game is a combination of score and difficulty level. The palace is not a direct factor, though I suppose that if you have a fully developed palace it means you will likely have a high score and therefore you will indirectly get a better ranking.

Why is closer city spacing a good thing? Since cities can't share worker tiles, doesn't that put a damper on how much gold/science/food you can produce?

For most of the game you are only using 12 tiles before you get hospitalss. With a closer city spacing you can use more of your land tiles. in the early part of the game which give you more of every thing.

And closer cities are easier to defend as troops can be moved in between them faster early on (when you just have roads). You want a balance between close and no wasted tiles at the same time...

my major newbie mistake focusing to much on building a military, which is not an option. Actually, most of the choices above, result in the same thing - a lack of workers. But what causes this should be the question.

Other than military, as a new I thought I had to have as many wonders as possible in order to win, so that is what I voted for.

I voted 'other'. I think the biggest mistake is building too many defensive units. I know the game repeately tries to make you build Spears to defned new cities, where usually a token warrior is enough to deter the AI. Especially in the early game this drains way to much of your then still limited resources. When it comes to fighting you're better off with offensive units anyway.

Whenever my friend and I play hotseat, I'm shocked that he feels ten workers are okay for ten cities.

meh, i just won a monarch game conquering the world on small map size with 5 opponents and throughout the ancient age i only built 4 workers !?!??! (but i had heaps of slave workers from other civs). i never thought this would be possible.

And there it is. I'll guess heaps implies fifteen, twenty workers? Then it's as if you have eight, nine, or ten workers of your own. Add that to the four you built, and you have a somewhat okay number of workers for a small map.

In GOTM39, I only had 6.5 workers at the QSC date, but I felt I had a very strong position...

More workers damnit!

I'm getting to be very comfortable on the monarch level, but I guess compared to a lot of people on this forum, I'm still a newbee... I build almost all of the improvements in my cities, but I build them in the order of their need and importance. I build barracks in all of my cities just in case i have to quickly produce a large quantity of units for defence or counter attack. However, I never suffer from a bad economy... I do find myself every once in a while short on workers, but I always manage to make 10-20 more in 1-2 turns and I am right back on track...
I would say that common mistakes would be building the cities too far away, not enough workers/unimproved tiles and lack of a clear strategy/goal/victory condition.

maybe about 10 slaves, but i conquered really quickly and mostly only improved capital/non corrupt cities so it diddn't really matter in the end. but this worker rate only applies for quick conquer games. if you want a builder's game then you need heaps heaps more workers.
