n.
The condition or practice of having more than one spouse at one time. Also called plural marriage.

should polygamy be legal? why or why not?

i think we're suppressing the morman and muslim religions by banning such a thing.

Shouldn't be legal, because it would cause too much chaos

Not being able to make human sacrafices is suppressing some religions, but there are limits to what the word "freedom" implies.

Naw, we're just suppressing the obviously chauvinist and sexist corruptions of those religions. Seems millions of people from both religions (hundreds of millions, in fact) get by worshiping the Lord and making His will known to the world with just one wife. Amazing, huh?

So take the proverbial scraggly, dirty Davidian wannabe who thinks that the point of being Mormon is more chicks. Or take a Saudi prince with all four wives plus the concubines. If either insists he needs more than one partner because God ordained it that way, my answer to them is "that's why you'll just LOVE prison!"

a man should be free to choose if he has two(or more) wives. and those two women(or more) have the choice to be married to a man who is already married.

Have you EVER seen or heard of such a relationship except in cases of obvious cultism - e.g. where there is a dangerous imbalance (legal, cultural, psychological) being used to the man's benefit? And why, for instance, is this discussion not about "a woman should be free to have as many husbands as she wants?"

If a man is stupid enough to tie himself to more than one woman, then let him. It's his hell, after all.

I think men complain about being tied to a woman because he can only have one wife. With polygamy, he wouldn't be tied. He'll just be like a bachelor.

Could be. . . but I see it as having more women nagging after you all the time. One is bad enough. . . .I can't imagine two or more.

On a semi-related note, what do you all think of line marriages, a la Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Misteress? More of a corporation than a marriage, if you ask me. . .

Why on earth would one want to marry more than one? Why add to the misery? Oh wait I read about this somewhere... They are, what do you call it... Masochists, is it?

Nah.
If there isn't equality in marriage, it ends up making one somehow the "inferior" of the other. And I can't see how you can have equality with one man and his harem.

As a Libertarian, I obviously must vote 'yes'.

As I stated in another thread, I do not believe polygamy would affect my life. Even so, it is not my right nor the right of the government to force people into decisions or not to make decisions that will not physically hurt others.

However, I understand the traditional/christain foundation of this country and would choose not to fight this battle.

What about polyandry where a woman has more than one husband? This rarely seems to be discussed which makes me think that there is an inherent sexism at work here.

I did not bring the subject to attention. However, my feelings would be identical, concerning polyandry.

No. It wouldn't fit in our cultural and justice system.

But I strongly agree with Enemy Ace too. :)

I vote no. Multiple marriages (both ways) are inevitably exploitative. Vulnerable people need protecting.

Of course it should be legal. This way the best genes will spread (there men with bad genes won't find a woman)

Well, polygamy is that too (gr. poly = many, gamos = parteners). Many people confuse polygamy with polyginy (gr. poly = many, gynecos = female). So in the Arab world for instance, polyginy is allowed, but not polyandry...

But a bit on the side... polygamy doesn't necessarily mean polyginy+polyandry ;)

Edit: But, drop Christian pre-conceptions, there should be NOTHING morally wrong with polygamy (as long as divorce laws are tweaked a little).

Well, it has not all to do with Christian pre-conceptions.
There is also the equality thing, and the jealousy stuff. Like it or not, it's natural and human to wish for exclusive relationship :D

No. The State should not sanction such a relationship, though there is nothing stopping a person living with two or more other persons in such a relationship if they so wish.
