i say no. btw i'm pretty sure that mormons quit the polygamy tradition. last thing i need is a bunch of famous men taking away all the women. if someone wants to have lots of women just don't get married. then there is the whole problem with having to make many new divorce laws, and people having problems with spouse after trying to get a new wife/husband without their consent it just sounds like more of a problem than anything.

to clarify mainstream mormons stopped practicing polygamy in the 19th century (mainly to gain statehood for Utah)

So let me get this right. You want to deny people's freedoms because to grant them equality would be a hassle? If anything we would give alot of divorce lawyers good jobs.

never read in the Bill of Rights that you have the freedom to marry as many people as you wish. and whats equal about me getting no wife while someone has 200?

As far as i'm concerned we could get rid of the whole marriage thing and it would be fine by me if 2 people are in a serious relationship then they could go to the courthouse and ask for medical responsiblity papers(should one have to go to the emergency room the other can make decisions like taking them off life support). Thats the only thing i can think they would need right now. and if someone wants to go to a church so they can have the whole symbolic deal then let them. And that would be the end of all divorce and divorce lawyers:mwaha:

The issue of polygamy is pretty much the same as for same-gender marriage. In most modern societies, if you want to live like that then you can, but you miss out on the legal rights of a marriage partnership.

These rights differ from society to society but are usually very beneficial. There may be tax advantages, inheritance advantages, the ability to sign on behalf of the other(s) for medical emergencies, insurance benfits, pension benefits and the list goes on.

the arguement is not about can we live as we want but more will society recognise how we live and allow us to operate with the same legal benefits as traditional partnerships.

If 3, 4 or 5 people decide to live together and have one householding system, who is gonna stop them?

Besides the gov't and any religious community? I dunno. . .

I guess, just so long as they don't call it a 'marriage' it will be okay.

This might be cool. . . but I don't know if I can share my wife with another guy. Of course, sometimes I wish another guy would come and take her away. . . .preferably one with more money than me! ;)

There's also the possibility of polyandroginy. Or is it polyginoandry?

Legalized or not, if people feel like it, no goverment is going to stop them. But the question is if the Western World is ready for theese "post-Christian" morals...

People used to think divorce would lead to "utter chaos".

and it often does. its just very common now, to the point that it is normal. because it is normal, society tends to ignore what it can do to the children in the family.

Having both a mom and a dad in the home is far more important to the child's development than most people think, imho.

off topic, I know, but I went through 2 messy divorces as a child, and it screwed me up for many years after. I felt compelled to comment on your statement.

I wonder how a polygamous marriage affects the children.

edit : spelling

Illegal, and punish it very severely.

With the exception of me.
Sadly, because of the burden of continuing the race and doing my bit in the demographic war by having 50 sons and 24 daughters, I will have to take on more than one breeding assistant. Being a godly man, the offspring have to be born in wedlock.
So, unless one can concoct a fertility drug doctrine so one wife can pop 6-12 out at a time over a 12 year period, I will have to make the sacrifice of taking multiple brides, with all of the necessary features and proper genetic background.
Rest assured that I will not enjoy any part of the exercise, and will send the females aside to the nunnery the instant they have done birthing.

Frankly, I think the stress of two women would kill me..... repeatedly....
