Polynesian Triremes and Ironclads Can Use Ocean Tiles

You've summed up one good way to play Polynesia. The other way is to play on a Terra Map and use BjoernLars' "Hail Mary" strategy. On turn one you set off with your Warrior and Settler and head for the new continent. The strategy is that the turns you lose in getting to the new continent will be made up for by the fact that you'll have the place to yourself to explore and build until the other Civs get to Optics. The downside is that you lose what's usually a pretty good start. You can mitigate this by settling your starting position and sending your Warrior off to find the new continent. You Warrior will have some time to explore before you pop your first Settler so that unit will have a good place to settle. I've tried the strategy both ways and the results have ranged from stellar to abysmal.

Sounds hilarious, because I play earth map most of the time I've had the occasional North American start (you generally have to deal with south america but with the size of middle america you can easily choke them off as far as expanding and war goes) and it sounds very similar to what you're describing (minus the actually having to get there ofcourse).

And as far as the design of ironclads go, you guys probably know alot more about it then the guys who made the actual unit, all the info the really needed is having ever seen an ironclad (which even something like Disney will amply provide) and figuring they only saw them in rivers.
As the other thread about the ironclad already brings up, it's just poor design and I find it hard to believe they spent much thought on it.

Oh and I believe it's common knowledge that since the death of the Roman empire (or transformation into the Catholic church, w/e) Italians have forgot how to wage war, even in cases of heavy technological superiority they managed to lose, probably too heavy culture/wonder focus.
