Possible Icons(Thunderbird)

They'd be for Combat Classes.

And yeah, I think this may be a cool way to go. They look good but there's a few that don't really have much clarity at the low resolution we are unfortunately bound to. The Orbital Aircraft stands out as one stronger example among those.

I thought they were going to look like the Civ4 ones. If they are just pictures taken from the web then any of us could do that. While I appreciate SoG's help I thought he was going to make them all look like they belong together. I mean they don't have the be blue and gold but it would be nice if they were all in the same style.

I agree Hydro. But as there are hundreds of classes to cover...Idk if the traditional civ style would work, at least not without only minor slight variations of other icons.

Then again that might not be a bad idea either. Promotions are good the way they are I think. I can make icons in that style for those, if that is what you want.

If you are going to make Promotion style, you can google Silhouettes. Also with Photoshop you can make anything a black or white silhouette and then color it gold.

The Gold is:
#E08E00
R: 224 G: 142 B: 0

I have made new ones before. Such as with the Canine promotions, terrain, etc. Sometimes you can doing it from scratch while other times you can use an existing picture and then trace it. Here are some Heroic icons I made using the tracing technique.

I know there are a LOT to do but that's why we need someone like you to only focus on making them look the best they can be.

I have some generic settings on Fireworks that makes this task rather easy for me but it does take a lot of dedication to make this many. I pretty much just draw them with a vector line tool then let the fill, bevel etc settings do the rest and plop the image right over the pre-made icon background.

As stated before, if we want to go about it this way, which really would be my preference, it would be nice to start by further defining background colors and what combat class categories use them so that the background defines the category.

That definitely would not be all that helpful considering some combat classes span the whole game and the blend between eras is not at all a fine line from one to the next.

Yes I think so. But with varying background colors that correspond to the colors as indicated on the first page of the Combat Mod Planning Document.

So really, I think we should take a moment to first create the background color templates that we don't already have. Hydro pointed me at the ones we already have to work with...

Here they are! :D

We just need to expand the color selections a bit and determine which defines which Combat Class category.

One thing that we will be able to benefit from by this approach too is that we'll be able to reuse the base icons for promotion designs. I imagine nearly all will be useful for that at some point as Combat Classes are a big part of Promotion focus in effect designs.

Indeed keeping them in that style just with diffrent backgrounds should do nicely. Note the color that have already been taken are ...

- Blue and Purple = Default
- Red = Field Commander
- Green = Heroic
- Brown = Animal
- Grey = Special
- Black = Nomad (Made but not applied yet)

Which means we could have still Orange, Teal, Pink, White, etc

The question is what color should go with what?

Also we may want to think about the foreground color. Rather than gold we may want to use silver or even another non-metallic color all together.

Those wouldn't apply the same in the Combat Class realm. That color scheme would apply only to the skill promotions. In this way we free ourselves up to redefine color meanings depending on what the button is for and we won't be so limited by what's been defined previously.

Also - The purple ones in our promotion scheme mean 'Compound Skill or Complex Strategy' right? Whereas the Blue is a Basic Skill or Strategy correct?

Could have the icon itself be color coded for promotions, like bronze for basic, silver for second tier, gold for third tier and white/platinum for final tier. Just an idea.
Interesting way to replace stars... I like it though not ALL promo icons hold true to the gold so we'd have to adapt those that don't such that the gold layer is more prominent so it could be adapted to this method. Examples of those may be found among the First Aid lines I think.

We often have more than 4 tiers too... consider some of our promotionlines extend up to 10 layers so we'd really need to plot out a full 10 color categories to achieve this. Either that or work with a set of 5 or 6 and then add a symbol that universally means we're onto the second set of 5 or 6.

Sometimes. For purple ones that generally true. However sometimes blue ones do that too.

True... but perhaps we should take a look at those blue ones and consider applying purple backgrounds then right?
