Possible new civilization game: make our own!

Heh. have you joined the group yet?

Been watching this thread for a while now, weird how it went from "make our own!" to "make my own!". Group participation kind of implies group sharing. Don't get me wrong, I love Steph's work. He has some of the best units out there. No where in this thread though do I see a download the source so everyone can tinker with it link.

@moderators

Isn't this topic better suited for the other games forum? There really isn't much here anymore that deals with editing data files to change default behavior of Civ3.

Join the usergroup. The main thing with this is that it's a civ3-style game (although, Steph's trying to re-code the existing work into hexagons) and most people moved on to civ4 following the 'the King is dead, long live the King'/out with the old, in with the new' type of reasoning.

I didn't know how much help I can possibly be. I don't even know how to properly install the downloads let alone program a new game:crazyeye:, perhaps I can play test the product to see if its idiot proof.

Could it be related to the number of programers, artists or designers who actually volunteer to give some real help?

There are plenty of artists and designers who have posted units and graphics here. Listing your project at sourceforge.net might garner you some programming help.

I've been to several independant game programming sites to get support. Very difficult to get.

Game programming sites are not where you want to be looking for coding help. The best places to look are sites dedicated to open source such as sourceforge. Who knows, you may even run across a professor willing to make it a class project.

Will you convert them from civ3 or make brand-new gfx for them?

I think everyone has to remember that even though different people are willing to help, this is essentially Steph's project. He has already committed a lot of time to it.

In my opinion if anyone is willing to help out, then they should leave a message on this forum and I'm sure Steph will call on then when he needs them. As much as it is a group effort, someone has to lead the way, and as Steph has initiated the project from the beginning, it would only be natural that he have that privilege if he is willing.:)

Personally I am no programmer and have very limited graphics abilities, but if someone is needed to work on civ-pedia descriptions or research, I will be happy to help out.;)

PLEASE, MY OFFICE PC WAS SOMETHING “CRAZY” AND I COULDN´T FIND THE LATEST POST IN THIS THREAD, SO IF NEEDED, REDIRECT ME

Hi! Maybe some of you guys already know I’m new. Steph, for example, gave such excellent points of view on the topics and questions I had posted in a thread last week. Thank you, Steph.
I think this idea of developing a whole new game is great. Maybe I had dreamed of before and I think this community can make such a dream become true (I don´t think it has been only a dream of mine, many of you may say the same, I guess)
If I may offer some ideas about the game´s general design, I will be pleased if you read them. I must declare, first of all, that I’ve only played Vanilla Civ III before and, yes, I’ve tried to mod it but I wasn´t quite lucky and I didn´t know about this great site then.
About the issues relating to Civ III copyright, my self I’m a lawyer, I could see that jewmpaloompa is right, but not necessarily like that. Maybe this idea could offer a clue on the framework development: I´ve been recently researching about free software and game engines. Among the free software community you can find treasures like FreeCiv, a totally free Civilization Game Released under the GNU General Public License with, of course, open source. This is the link where you can download it:

http://www.download-free-games.com/freeware_games/freeciv.htm

Maybe it can be helpful, I don´t know. If not or you´ve already explored this, I guess I’m late!

Next, if I may so, I will point out some ideas I think the global design should study:

1-Game Timeline: There must be more than 4 Ages, so mankind development through time could be precisely felt, i.e., for example, Ancient Ages, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classic Ancient Age, Dark Ages, High Middle Ages…. And so on.

2-Turns/Years: I think Players must enjoy more every Age and historical period, so years per turn could be customizable or change according to Ages and Tech advances.

3-Tech & Governments: The game should feature the different known Economic Production Forms (i.e. Primitive Community, Slavery, Feudalism, Capitalism, Socialism and Communism) in such a way that those Economic Forms could have decisive influence in civilizations development, besides the bonuses and handicaps Governments provide.

4-Military:

a)-Definitely military units should be multifigure (maybe brand new ones besides the amazing ones created by this community)

b)-Military should be more “military”. First: units must express in terms of quantity a number of warriors/soldiers/vehicles/ships/planes not only hit points levels, i.e., each unit may represent, for example, 1000 soldiers drafted and trained based on one city´s manpower (that where they are recruited) So you can see the strength of your units in men. In addition to this they should be named with military names a I suggested or asked on a thread I started on April 19th 2010 (See Civ3 - Creation & Customization, Help I´m New, thread started by Marcus1982)

c)-I think is capital that units can be combined and grouped into armies as de default rule. Players should be able to select multiple units at once, merge them, assign them a leader (something like –but not the same- Paradox´s “Hearts of Iron/Europa Universalis: Rome”) and check if he wants to, all the units in the stack. The stack graphic could be specific but also could be that of the most numerous unit within it, therefore acting as in game info.

d)-There must be a more detailed –but not quite complicated- battle resolution engine, function, algorithm or whatever it is called. Perhaps showing the fighting animation on map and once it is finished, an after-battle report showing casualties and leader/units experience gains. Also a siege function, so you can be able not only to assault cities but siege them and try their capture by famine, periodic small assaults, walls sapping, etc. something similar must be think for naval warfare.

e)-Each Civilization should have their own units (not only UU but all) i.e., maybe Pikemen could have the same attributes for everyone but never the same graphic nor name which will be specific for every civilization.

Ok, I’ve written a lot! Maybe later I will post new words. Thank You all.

Most of your ideas are already planned, if I can find time to work on the game. I'm a bit busy at the moment I cannot commit as much as I'd like.

Some are already available in Civilization III, in my mod, thanks to my expanded game system.

1-Game Timeline: There must be more than 4 Ages, so mankind development through time could be precisely felt, i.e., for example, Ancient Ages, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classic Ancient Age, Dark Ages, High Middle Ages…. And so on.

--> I currently have 8 eras, from Early Bronze age to late middle ages, which are playable, and a total of 24 are planned if I can ge to th end.

2-Turns/Years: I think Players must enjoy more every Age and historical period, so years per turn could be customizable or change according to Ages and Tech advances

--> The number of years (or month)/ turn varies with each era.

e)-Each Civilization should have their own units (not only UU but all) i.e., maybe Pikemen could have the same attributes for everyone but never the same graphic nor name which will be specific for every civilization

--> Each civilization has almost only flavour units, with different graphics and possibly stats.

Sorry about double post: my PC was kind of crazy going back and forward over the WEB so i was making mistakes every minute.
I know there must be plenty of ideas alreday developed by you, guys. I don´t want to be, like an old saying in my country says, "the one who has invented the warm water", whichs means some one that happily expresses an idea already developed by others or too obvious.
I just want to help. I know the work is hard, i don´t have any experience modelling, programming, but i do have some kind of experince in analysing strategy games, their pros and contras, their designs´ weaknesses and strengths, strategy players prefferences, and also a great desire of see materialized so many wishes of this great community with this new game.
Empire-building games are an excellent choice for most strategy games, and their interest increases when these games are able to give players a little more speciffic control over military as i suggested, without becoming a micro-management nightmare.
Finally, in order to be up to date, please, could you tell me:

1-How far has this project advanced?

2-Is the General Design already settled?

PS: The reason i write a lot is that i can´t login to this forum at home, so i print the last posts, read them, prepare the answers an on the following day i post them when i get to my office.

Regards to every one
