Post Short Single Player Tips Here

Fiddlin, you should play some AW games to get your war-mongering skills up. Nothing teaches that like a good AW game.

I can't seem to resist going for world conquest which rarely happens before the official ending of the game.
3 things to think about for Conquest Victory:
1. Build Veteran fast-moving units
2. Don't build defensive units
3. As soon as you have say 6 units, Attack!!

You'll be done well before the end of the game!

Maybe, you'll be saying Tanks?.....Modern Armor?.........Don't need 'em.

In my experience, at any level, Cavalry is as high as you need to go! (Of course Cavalry Armies are pretty sweet!) :)

I just had a "Eureka!" moment, and guess why...

NEVER build a wonder in a city next to a volcano. *shudders*

I learned way back in the early C3C days to take care around volcano's. I learned from a Ploy AU game, where Aeson lands an invasion stack next to one and puff all dead.

If you think THAT is bad, I had a game once (it was an early playtest of the Final Fantasy mod) where I got a notice saying that the French had been eliminated 10 turns into the game! I put my forces on full alert, wondering who could have gotten that powerful so fast, espeically since I'd not even got my second city established yet.

Long story short, one of my warriors who was scouting to the South came upon a pile of rubble at the base of a volcano some 20 turns later.... Apperantly the stupid French built their capitol next to a volcano, and it erupted before they could build a settler

Which brings me to this point:

ALWAYS build cities at least 1 tile away from a volcano... Volcanoes can ONLY destroy improvements, units and cities in tiles IMMEDIATELY adjacent to them... Anything outside that 1-tile radius is safe.

To illustrate:

In this picture, Nalbina and Rabanastre are perfectly safe, due to the fact that they both have at least 1 tile separating them from the volcanos. Rabao (the one Bastok city) is not: They built thier city in one of the adjacent tiles. Ironically, despite having FIVE volcanoes in that small area, not one erupted the entire game.

So have I, so I give them more space, unless it is late in the game. They seem to go dormant later.

I've never seen any volcano destroy anything outside the adjacent tiles, and I've done a LOT of playtesting and playing since Civ III Conquests came out.

....Unless my terminology is confusing you: What I mean is to build your cities so that there's at least a 1-tile gap between your city and the volcano, not in a tile that's TOUCHING the volcano tile.

Even at that, I've noticed that if the surrounding terrain is particularly mountainous, oftentimes the volcano will only erupt on its own tile.....

I'd like to see some screenshot proof of volcanos destroying terrain two tiles away before I'll change my mind.

i imagine that the chances of volcanos is much like the chances of citizens dying of disease. The event is at random, but it is based on the amount of years that go by, not turns. So in the early game, when each turn lasts half a century, the computer runs the "erupt?" check 50 times (one for each year) in between turns, offering a much higher probability that one of those checks will come up "yes" resulting in "poof!". Later in the game when there are only 10 or 5 or less years IBT, there are fewer checks to possibly come up "yes" IBT, so volcanos don't seem to erupt "as often". At least that is my understanding of it.

In any case, poor Frenchy bastards :p

So have I, so I give them more space, unless it is late in the game. They seem to go dormant later.

I think that is because the turns later in the game pass by more slowly, so that it is many a time until it erupts again, though it is not a many a turn.

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and Civ3. I'm a fan of Sid Meier's games, I have played Colonization, Pirates, Civililization 2, and every one of these games were awsome, last week I got Civilization 3 and have been playing for about 3 days. I restarted the game a couple of times, because of bad maps and I didn't know how to play right. Then I found this page and read some of the tips that helped me. :)

Now I'm playing on the easiest level (haha, I know, a noob :D ) with two AI apponents (Babylon, France, I'm Japanese), I mainly use governers to manage my cities, today I got to railroads (soon I'll be having tanks, if I can get to some rubber :D ). Then I'll kill the Babylons, who are on the same island than me. :king:

Well I don't know if someone mentioned this tip that I found when I was playing today,

If you have a ship selected, press key E and the ship will automaticlly explore the seas, same goes for the land units! That saved me a lot of time on exploring, so I can concentrate on my cities and workers.

Thanks for reading and sorry for my bad English!

Cya,
U.

Welcome to the forums, urban :) No apologies needed. By coming here, you are already on your way to becoming a Civ3 pro!

Pressing E actually works with land units, too. If you want your scouts in the beginning of the game to go around exploring on their own. I am not recommending you do it that way for a myriad of reason, but just fyi.

One or two things for ya... don't be afraid to load up on rival civs. If you only play with a minimum of civs for your map size, you miss out on a lot of fun. Plus, with more civs, they will keep each other's growth in check, and you will not end up with two monsterous neighbors. Also (at least in vanilla), the map generates resources based largely upon the amount of civs in the game. So you are more likely to get your hands on one or more luxuries and strategic resources. To give you an example, since you are only playing a map with three civs, there should only be 3 (or 4?) sources of rubber on the map. If you were playing with 8 civs, there will be at least 8 sources of rubber, and one would more likely be close to you.

And if you want to find out what all the shortkey commands are, here is a link with a spreadsheet: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8184

Go down to the 8th post and click on the attachment to download it.

Good luck and happy civving!

Thanks for the welcome, capnvonbaron. I'm gonna be very bussy reading the forums for a couple of days. As soon as I finish the current game I'm start a new one with 5 ofther civs, diffrent type of map, try other civs, it'll make things more interesting. ;)

Anyway on my current game, I defeated the babylons, got some tanks. Now I'll gonna just secure all the free resources on the map and try to advance all techs and try to get the space victory. I just built my first carrier and nuclear submarine, haha, France stands no chance. :D

Well got to go to bed, it's a bit late here (11.09 PM). Thanks for all the help to everyone who posted a tip in this thread!! :goodjob:

Hi folks,

Just wanted to say hi as a noob to the forums. Am a relative noob to the game aswell, recently made the move up from Chieftan after getting a bit bored by the lack of effort needed to keep up with the AI in research etc, but have started a few games on Monarch + Regent to test out ideas and tips I've read around the forum. to all the greats who have helped me so far!:woohoo:
The only thing I've found so far is that I've struggled to get as far as the modern, or even late industrial, age at Chieftan and wondered if anyone had any tips on how to speed up my research on the lower levels? I expect there are some around but have prob missed in my eagerness to learn!!!

Cheers

Welcome to CFC, chappers86!

This may seem counter-intuitive, but research will go faster as you move up in levels. This is because tech trading is very valuable in Civ 3, and because the AI is handicapped at lower levels. At Chieftain, you have to research everything youreself. As you move up in levels, you can research some things yourself, while allowing the AI to research other techs, for which you can then trade.
