I dug out the specs for said "Darkshade class" battleship. He does have quite an active imagination. Scary, too.

Battleships
These are nuclear powered, and equipped with 12 25" guns, which fire ordinary, and extended range munitions. With a top speed of over 45 knots, they are clad with up to 25 inches of electromagnetically hardened steel and titanium, with internal bulkheads and kevlar where appropriate. At 1250 feet long, and displacing over 100 000 tons, they are the most powerful ships afloat, in this microcosm.
They carry the SPY-1 AEGIS radar, and SM-2 MR and ER Missiles (Block V), fired from launchers, and VLS. The ships also have a 204 cell VLS for Tomahawk missiles, as well as fully modernized ASROC capability. They additionally carry 48 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. They also have the following capabilities - flagship operations, Target Acquisition Battery (TAB) radar, Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS), mine detection systems and counter measures, cooperative engagement box, 8 Phalanx CIWS, 1 extended range, reloadable MLRS in armored box (for even more shore support) and the secondary armament of 24 5" guns.
They have the capacity to accomodate several hundred troops, as well as having hospital and forge facilities, and and carrying supplies.

How do you like my new El Captain Fez Monk avatar? Its a horribly sloppy Photoshop job, but its the thought that counts.

I'm all for the Darskshade class Battleship, but we need some harriers and helos, esp. at that length. We may wanna have some mini-Darkshades, so they can fit thru the Panama Canal. Or else we deninitely must build not a measly 8 or 10, but 50 or 300. When someone can walk from LA to Tokyo, stepping on nothing but US Navy Battleships, we can let the forges & shipyards have a rest.

Maybe a few should have 2 to 6 superguns... pinpoint extended range of 125+ miles, with projectile heights exceeding 118,000 feet. Naturally, some should be "specials" (nukes, and some neutron warheads).

The vast majority of those specifications are well within reason, with the only object being cost. There were studies into fitting the Iowas with AEGIS, and modernized BBGs would have 128+ Tomahawks. The Standard missiles are just a natural consequence of AEGIS
All one did was raise the gun size, and consequently the armoured plate, and thus the size of the ships. Going along with the extended range munition research of the late 1980s and 1990s, that gives them a bigger range. The internal bulkheads and kevlar are modern SOPs in naval ships.
The steel, and titanium in some places armor, is just taking what has already been done, and improving it slightly.
Making them nuclear powered makes sense, as it saves fuel cost, and allows longer deployment, which is their raison d'etre.
They already have the secondary armament, 4 Phalanx CIWS, Harpoons, and all. The various electronic and C4I capabilities outlined are one's that would be put in a modernized Iowa.
The MLRS is just a little tribute to the rocket LSTs of WW2. :)
It is just taking a ship frame the size of a Nimitz class CVN, and BBGN-ing it. :)
As starlifter mentioned, the draught of such a vessel may present certain transit problems, which can be solved by two methods in combination -forward deployment, and dredging the Panama Canal to fit them. As for needing aircraft on such a vessel, the aircraft are left to the supercarriers, which carry 250 of 'em. Some helos might be carried.
It combines the capabilities of a cruiser, a floating arsenal, forge, supply and hospital ship, a flagship, a national power projection asset, naval gunfire support of a battleship, a surface warship that can blast any other out of the water (just think of the nearest surface rivals - the Pyotr Veliky Raketny Kreysers. No match at all.), a fast method of deployment and victory in the littoral zones, and inland. It also fulfills the requirement for more missiles afloat, in the most survivable vessel ever.
They should operate as part of composite battle groups, which can thus smash all opposition, not to mention be substantially faster than them.
All the various capabilities are within reach, so, in conclusion, the Darkshade class BBGN is more than just the product of an active imagination. It is a vision for what could and should be. :D

Let's get 'em built, Pronto!

:goodjob:

PS, People may have heard of the 600 ship navy, in the mid-1980's buildup under Reagan & Leyman. I think we hit 588 or so, peak. We are down below 450 now, maybe below 400. So maybe what we should do is keep it simple. Take 600, subtract the number of ships of our navy, and that equals the number of DS Class BBs we should build. :)

OK, OK! Quit the threadjacking, this is totally unacceptable. Now that I have made myself seem like a rule abiding CFCer;) , continue...:D

Thank you. :D
The last thing one will add is that the USN IS down under 400 ships, as starlifter speculated. Something around 346.
Anyway, further correspondence on the matter is welcomed, in an appropriate thread in OT should anyone wish.

And my search for a custom avatar continues.:scan:

Why don't you try a Elijah Wood avatar?

Like either of these(from LOTR):

ElijahWoods2.gif

Hey Fez, your Avatar could look pretty good if you have a larger original, and make zoom in, sharpen, increase contrast, decrease a little gamma, increase saturation, and maybe shift the hue by one or two points to red.

Really.

:)

I finally found an avatar I think I can live with. ;)
I was re-reading the 1st German Succession Game last night, and got the idea. Some posters "awarded" us (donsig, Knight-Dragon, Ohwell and myself) the Iron Cross 1st Class for destroying Egypt with our panzers.

Man that was a fun game... :)
Ah, the memories! Razing size-20++ city after city. I love the smell of Panzer fumes in the morning (copyright joespaniel). :D

Now there's an idea. I might take one of those one's as a stop gap measure, until I can find a ...better... pic. :mwaha:
Problem is, the one's I have are quite big.

EDIT: Both of them pics are too large. :(

IMO, that would be perfect :D

Which is why you are a spotty Finnish teenager and I'm the Prince of fricken' Darkness! :satan:

Those two earlier on the page, particularly the second, are good. But the second was 700 bytes too big.
