Preview: NiNES: A Broken Galaxy (new attempt)

How should I treat stories, and how rich should the galaxy be? See post below.

Because the map is tailored after the number of players joining, to make it not too crowded and not too sparse. Also the map isn't so big that y'all won't scout it out together in only a few turns. This means I can't really add sections to the map on the fly, since you would have seen them.

That said, technically I could let people join later on, if they would agree to play small upstarts. Or they could join as rebel factions if you guys don't watch out. But the map would be more crowded for it.

Update Zero started now.

Description: NAM, or Norsk Automated Mining industries has a long history stretching right back to the 22nd century on earth. The technical demands of profitably mining the truly enormous coal reserves* off Norway’s coast lead to an explosion of robotics, teleoperation, AI and extreme environment engineering, and the vast wealth engendered made the company a notable power (and one which became very integrated with the still EU-independent Norwegian state). Naturally when the solar system opened up NAM units were at the forefront of resource extraction across difficult environments from Triton to Mercury. During the great expansion NAM spread across the stars, typically acting as subcontractors to other Commercial entities to break ground in difficult systems whilst local industry started up. It is in this period that the “Cluster” evolved as the principle NAM unit, consisting of a self sufficient group of large mining robots and the industrial base and habitats to keep them running, moving from system to system to find work, with a closely knit and somewhat insular social structure. As the Scourge spread throughout Known Space, A cluster with the designation “Gymir-Rho” was working the highly radioactive belt orbiting the third star in the Rigel system**. As the systems failed the Cluster relocated to CII, where a small Terraforming project was occurring under the auspices of another company. A few megaton mining charges later and the planet was under the Clusters authority, though most of their machinery had to be abandoned in orbit. Despite the slightly radiation intense environment the people are getting back on their feet, and the wealth of worlds beckons once again.

*Even if you have other power sources coal and oil are worth mining for the other uses. Current estimates put Norway’s offshore coal reserves at 3x10^9 tonnes – and when you consider the know reserves elsewhere in the world only add up to 1.9 trillion you realize that’s quite impressive…though completely inaccessible with today technology.
**yes the real Rigel, but its 2000 AU away from the supergiant primary

Great to have you on board Dis! :goodjob: And just in time to make Update Zero too!

 Gee, if you insist on reality I wasn't planning to add in any stars outside of ~200 ly of Sol. But oh well, who am I to go against the wishes of the players. And now that you've forced me to widen my horizons, it sure does give me somewhat looser reigns when naming the rest of the stars.

Bah, just have fewer worlds that were worth connecting by Hyperstatic fields and you can narrow the field quite a lot. And it would fit in very nicely with the background to be on the edge of the map.

I'm honored that some inspiration was taken from stDarNES I!

I wish I had the time to devote to joining this venture, but I will be keeping an eye on it.

Oh, and if you were modeling the Scourge off stDarNES I, there's some back info that never really came into light. If you're interested in using it, shoot me a PM.

My thinking exactly. And your wish is my command (already ahead of you ;)). Btw, I nerfed your wishes for traits a bit, you did ask for quite a lot. :p

Too bad, but I understand, and you're more than welcome to drop by and comment. :)

Note the ominous lack of a third part for that quote.

Oh, I'll be keeping an eye on this, for sure. There are ideas in here that weren't in my NES. I'm curious to see if your system will work. Mine worked OK, but had some flaws, and was a pain in the butt to Mod.

Besides, if new ideas do work, then they stand a good chance of making it into stDarNES II... which will happen when I know I'll be able to keep up with weekly updates.

Minutes left until the main thread goes live. I'm calling the poll to a close now, it is fairly clear what the results are.

Neutral worlds will be somewhat less productive than the homeworlds, but not what you would call barren. There is a clear majority for this, both among players and non-players.

The poll for stories clearly ended with a majority for random bonuses, however I will not follow that completely. Since my economic system is so much more finegrained than your normal dasian economy, I have the luxury to be able to give out bonuses of varying size, from negligeble to sizeable. With this in mind, I will give out bonuses to all stories, but rather small ones. And on top of this I will have a system with larger random bonuses in the style of ITNES.

Off to start a thread...
