Preview: The Centurion MK VIII Tank Project

Oh man! I nearly choked on my Coca-Cola! As it is, I think some when up my nose!

Front Wheel: :goodjob:

Blue Chevrons: :goodjob:

Changing the Turret: Hmmm. It depends on if you're trying to do the original 1950's & 60's Centurion or the later models. (Being a Mk VIII it must be later?) It looks like, from those photos, that the Swedes added some additional armour plates on the front and modified the turret. Your model looks like the earlier un-modified Centurion. Perhaps you could do it both ways and have the un-mod Centurion as a unit in between the WWII style tank and the modern armour style Centurion?

Hey, it turns out that Canada did, in fact, have Centurions. We had three "squadrons" of them, one of which saw action in the Korean war. I have attached a picture of one of them that is now on display at the military base in Borden, Ontario, just outside of the Royal Military College.

Hey thats a good idea, you could then upgrade the unit to a better version of the same thing, that would be great for scenarios, and it would actually make sense to upgrade that way, in a way some upgrades leave the head spinning, imagine the poor engineers having to implement them

I would think that the single biggest change would be upgunning from the 20 pounder to the L7 105 mm. The upgrade could be reflected by raising the attack factor, with the defense value remaining the same.

Kingpin, I'm glad you got that little Imjin river reference.

Really, the difference between the Mark V and Mark VIII is upgraded armour, turret and main gun, right?

I would make the the Mark VIII roughly equal to the firaxis modern armour (more or less... more likely a little less) and the Mark V in between the tank and modern armour. I would make it equal in stats to Smoking Mirror's T-55 tank, which was it's Russion contemporary.

But we're still a long way off of figuring out what stats to give it...

I like Kingpin's idea about giving it stats very close to the stock Modern Armor. The only stat I would question would be the movement. Centurions weren't particularly fast and the Modern Armor seems to move at a pretty good clip.

It seems that middle front section (between the tracks) is a little short or slopes down to far or something. It just makes the tracks look like they are sticking way out in front of the tank. Some of the pictures in the this thread show what looks to be extra metal plating at that section. Maybe you could do that. Up to you, it's your unit. But overall it does look very good and everything else looks right on or so close that it is really difficult to tell the difference without nitpicking.

Yeah, probably because its no shadows, the tracks and the frontslope is aligned in a mategroup, so they are attached to each other. But I agree its look like they hoover.
The extra armor plating is on other versions on the Centurion, such as the Swede Strv 105.

I think it looks spot on!

I like it; Very nice.
I usualy use the T55 as an intermediate unit between the Tank and modern armour- Its difficult to decide when to have it come available, and what stats to give it; I have a Heavy tank (My tigertank) come with Rocketry and the advanced armour (T55) come with Nuclear power or Nuclear Fission- I give it stats somewhat less than the modern armour, and require less resources.

OmniMower,

I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to respond to your isometrics question. It is a little bit off. I'm not really even sure how to describe it to you...

I'll be back in a minute. A picture is worth a thousand words...

Okay... I'm back. I have (hopefully) attached a picture below that shows both the current view of the Centurion next to the Modern Armour. You can see that they are not quite the same perspective. The Centurion needs to be... up more and a little more to the back? Perhaps someone else could actually tell you the proper angles to be looking down on the unit...
