Hi just installed Civ 5 mac, new to the game and when I first ran it on the tutorial the entire background is just grey with only the small icons, such as settlers, warriors etc. appearing. I thought this may be a GPU problem so I put all the settings on minimum and still the same problem!

I'm running an iMac with:
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz
4GB RAM
nVidia 9400 Graphics Card (256MB)

These are over the min requirements for mac, the graphics card min was GeForce 8600 so can anyone help me to fix the problem, help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

All video settings are on the very minimum and it is still showing the grey background.

Um, Civ V mac isn't out yet...

You mean that your Bootcamping it?

Hello, welcome

Where did you get it? Are you running the Steam version in WINE?

[PS] That screenshot really begs to be reduced in resolution and/or size = I gave up waiting for it to download.

Sorry bout the res i just uploaded it at the res i was playing on. It's a ported version using:Wineskin v1.2
Wine 1.3.3

Ok. I get it now! Perhaps it has something to do with running it on Wine. I've heard it doesn't do everything perfect.

BTW, I see you are using Safari! I still use Safari on mine too!

Please don't be fooled into believing that's the Mac version of Civ5. It's the Windows version, running in WINE. I would be surprised if anyone can tell you definitively what the minimum specs are for that arrangement..

I suggest you find the support area for that ported version and ask there. I think civ_king has tried it, but I'm not aware of anyone else here who claims to have run it successfully.

Well thanks for the help, I found out from looking through some googled sites that there is a problem with the port on Vine that means it cannot be run in fullscreen, when I ran it otherwise (not much difference) part of the map showed up although there was a large 3D boundary in grey (around 80% of the screen) where the map had not loaded and I could not do anything :S , so I guess I'll try search for a solution or just wait for the mac version.

Yeah, it's only a few weeks till it comes out for Mac!:)

Still horribly slow to load. It's 1.5 MBytes! And now you have put it in line on the thread, so everyone has to wait for it to load in order to read the page.

I would guess the grey bits are simply the areas that are covered with the fog of war. If you reduce the graphics settings to minimum, that's what you get on any system instead of fluffy clouds.

sorry bout the size [again]! I upgraded the graphics res and now works just fine, very happy!

It loads really fast for me.

Once the image has loaded the first time, it's cached by Safari. It doesn't have to come down the wire again unless Safari ages out its cache, or the image changes.

If you save/upload the picture as a .jpg instead of a .png it will be much smaller and easier on people's browsers.

That screenshot looks like many others I've seen in the General and Strategies forum as far as the display of the 'fog of war'. Your settler, warrior and land detail look just like mine with graphics all on low (MBP 2.8, 9600M, 8G of Ram). I'm running it in Bootcamp and Windows 7.

Hi, i just tried VMWare Fusion 3 not succesfully

All i do is to wait Civ 5 Mac Version for 23 November...

Yeah Fusion has always been worse than Parallels graphics wise. In every other aspect it's better in my experience, especially for stability and support. I have Civ5 running in Wine atm, it works pretty well, though it's missing the needed systems to run multiplayer and download mods. Took a smart linux friend of mine about 2 hours to get it running though or I'd share with people how to do it.

I'm running Civ5 on my mac as well. To fix that issue just up the Fog of War quality to anything except the lowest.

The only issue I've been having with mine is with the high quality cut scenes of some of the other leaders not showing up and corrupting the game when they appear. So far this holds true for Catherine of Russia. If I change the option in the config file to use only screenshots instead of the little movie backgrounds it fixes this issue.

Also if you want to run your copy in Full Screen mode without the dock showing right click on the Civ5 app and select "Show Package Contents". You'll then need to double click on "Wineskinsettings" in the next window.

Once the wine program is launched select the 'Set Screen Options' button and change the option from 'Rootless (windowed)' to 'Full Screen' at the next window and save and exit. Then relaunch Civ5 and the annoying dock won't be there anymore. While in Civ5 to get back to other programs or the desktop just hit command+h to hide the app in the background.
