Hi, I just recently purchased and downloaded Civ IV. I want to play online but I am having some problems. I downloaded the patch off Direct2Drive and updated my DirectX although I still cant get it to work. The error I'm getting is Failed to load DLL: DSetup. If anyone could help me with this it would be GREATLY appreciated. I should mention I tried renaming the game before I realized that there were problems with the patch but I have renamed it back.

If you recently downloaded the game from Direct2Drive, the game is already pre-patched before you downloaded it and you don't need to install the 1.74 patch. You will need to uninstall the game and re-install it and not apply the patch from Direct 2 Drive.

What about if you downloaded it from gamestop.com, I'm having a similar problem but when I try and install the latest patch for multiplayer it says I don't have civilization 4 on my computer.

If you purchased the game from Direct 2 Drive and if you are installing your game from a previous download, you will need to re-download the entire Civ IV game again so that you already have the latest patch already built in. If you are not sure which version you have installed, open the Civ IV installation folder then open the README.htm file. You should see your version listed at the top of the file. In this case if you already re-downloaded the game again, you should see v174.
Unfortunately if you got the game from another site, you will need to contact their support or the games support itself for more help. My references here are for the Direct 2 Drive download only.

Hi Harry thank you for responding to my post. Unfortunately I did not purchase the game from D2D, I purchased and downloaded it from Gamestop, then tried downloading patch1.74 from D2D and installing it(with the latest version of DirectX). This is leaving me with the message from the patch installation Failed to load DLL: DSetup when trying the D2D patch and the same message as the other posters, Civilization 4 is not installed when trying to download the patch in-game. I've searched the forums looking for other answers such as firewalls or re-installing though none of these have helped. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Get the patch from where you purchased it, such as gamestop.com. It may take them some time to patch their games.

Im am a silly little me man it came patched up to 1.74 but i cant get any mods to run??Ive Tried Ryes and FFH2 but they wont work??Any ideas!

I too have a prob with the patch, i own the normal version of civ4 and when ever i down load it it gives me the d3dsomthing or other error and wont run.

I have the same problem with having purchased Civ IV from trygames. In terms of patching to 1.74, I've been told I have to wait for trygames to update their download version, then re-download and re-install. Trygames apparently doesn't know when they'll get around to updating their version.
I bought BtS, but of course it won't install without the update. Now Firaxis support is telling me that even with the update the trygames version won't work with BtS. I found a post today too of someone who bought Warlords a while back and couldn't get it to install with a digital delivery Civ IV.
There was no warning on the trygames site that this might happen, and both Firaxis and trygames haven't stepped up to help me somehow. It's very frustrating.

The exact same thing happened to me. I just bought BTS after downloading Civ IV from trymedia. They are saying that 1.61 is the latest version they have and haven't given me a timeline for when 1.74 will be available. They are also trying to push the problem towards firaxis instead. Does anyone know what can be done? I guess I might have to get a refund for BTS.
Well, this is discouraging news and I'd like to resurrect this post in hopes some one could help me. Basically my situation has been explained above. Gamestop does in fact offer a patch but this patch leaves me with the error "the setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed" . I've tried reinstalling and renaming the directory to Civ 4 instead in IV. I've tried renaming the game in the registry editor. I've tried scouring the forums in hopes that some one could help me but nothing I have tried has worked. This is extremely discouraging to me because I just purchased BTS in hopes that it would come with a patch that would actually work. Unfortunately I am unable to install BTS because it requires 1.74 to be installed to install. Are my only options hoping Gamestop will refund my money and purchasing a different copy of the Civ 4 game?
I sent a lengthy e-mail to Trymedia's support adress requesting a specific release date for patch 1.74 for direct download and here was their response:

I have the same problem. No patch available, I won't be buying a game via download again. What a pain in the ass. Now I can't play multiplayer which is why I bought the game.

It attempted to update my installation to V1.74, so I never actually got to the installation of the expansion. I have tried using the patch update to v1.74 from Direct2Drive for the digital download version, but it appears to require a different activation code - as mine from trygames didn't work, despite having their delivery service logo on the activation page.
And it appears I can only grab the warlords expansion from Direct2Drive (where I bought it) with all the patches for the core game. Does anyone know a work around?

unfortunately you'll need a digital version of the patch that works for the version you have. you might want to contact trygames for that. Warlords should not require 1,74 are you sure you don't mean Beyond the Sword?

Yeah, the CD patch wouldn't work, and the patch for the digital distribution from D2D didn't work either (installed to a new directory, rejected my activation code for some reason...).
I understand that 1.74 is needed for BTS, but the Warlords download from Direct2Drive includes ALL the latest patches, so it attempts to install the 1.74 patch before installing Warlords, and I have no option to cancel that installation. If D2D offered the warlords without any of the patches I think I should be fine, or if trygames has the core game prepatched to v1.74, but neither seem to have that.
I might just go and get D2D's Civ4 + BTS bundle, but I don't want to buy the core game again because of their incompetence.
Edit: I even receive the error "you do not have a version of Civ4 installed" when I go through the auto-updater via the in-game menu. To me that seems just wrong, overall the DD of Civ4 (despite the greatness of the game) has really been handled poorly imo.
