So I played a game and my neighbor was Mao Zedong. I tried to remain friendly with him by having open borders and expanding my religion to him. Then out of no where, he declared war on me. I looked at our relationship and it said +2 for sharing the same religion and -3 this war has spoiled our relationship but he started the war so it couldn't be that. Is Mao Zedong known for attacking his friends for unknown reasons?

Mao is quite the opportunist. The answer, as to all questions about "help i was backstabbed", is to have a relatively powerful military. As long as you aren't the weakest possible target, you shouldn't be attacked.

Not Mao particularly. Catherine, according to the personality matrix, is the biggest backstabber. She would kill any best friend for you as long as your relationship is reasonable and the price is right.

Having a reasonable military does work in most cases, but some AIs are just jerks (Monty). I have been declared war by Monty with a +6/-0, and my military wasn't weak at that point.

Mao Zedong was the first one to ever backstab me in this game. Out of nowhere he declared war and captured one of my cities. Boy did I get angry. After that, not only did I recapture my city, I got napoleon and Kahn to to declare war on him, and captured his capital (in which he had all his units stacked in). Unfortuneatly, I lost all my army in the process, basically traded all my technology and gold to get the other two to go to war with him, and all I gained was his stupid starved bejing, while napoleon reaped all the other cities. Two turns later Montezuma decalred war on my poor butt and I lost the game. grrrr

Not had Mao do this, but it happens in almost every game I play with Isabella.

Catherine is another that I always end up at war with because she's constantly asking me to give her stuff, and go to war. Eventually I get annoyed and repeatedly ask her for tribute which takes our relations down to like -30. Which can be quite a laugh.

In fact, I started a Huge, Marathon, 18 Civ, Continents game the other week there, eventually found out Catherine was on the same continent as me. So I used world builder to delete all her cities before she could start any of her s**t. Not big, not clever, but definitely good for blood pressure. :)

Yeah, I've been backstabbed more than once by Mao, though that may be due to the fact that my army is always close to scolerotic before I get infantry.
