If you have shock, you get the strength bonus on defense when you are standing in open terrain, you get the strength bonus on offense when you are attacking into open terrain.

In other words the bonus applies to the hex the combat takes place on. I had to ask because I was having trouble choosing a tree when I normally use my first promotion to pwn a barb camp.
Does ranged combat bonus (for archers and such) also work when they defend on such terrain? Im asking cause the description clearly says it adds a bonus to ranged combat, which their defense is not.

And what happens when an archer with bonuses to ranged attacks becomes a rifleman, without ranged attacks? Are the promotions lost, or do they convert to bonuses to regular combat?
