I'm about to get a new computer, and it's coming with Windows XP Pro. I was wondering if I'd be better off sticking with Windows 2000 Pro...?

I would go wih XP myself. I use XP and it seems much better than 2000. However, if you are purchasing XP separate, you may want to consider using Home Edition instead of Pro. They are almost the same thing. The only real differences are Home edition only supports one CPU, will only accept Remote assisant calls (you cannot send them), and a less comprehensive user structure (only admin and guest while Pro has about a dozen).

So unless you need one of those three functions, I would save the cash.

I'm using Win XP Pro, I have no complaints whatsoever. I think it's when people start demanding extra of their OS and computer, that it starts crashing. I should be mentioned, though, that I haven't managed with success to crash Win XP Pro on my computer, which makes me quite satisfied and has therefore no wish to change/reformat like others occassionally do.

No complaints? Mine crashes whenever I try Civ3, so as to make it unplayable. It also crashes with some other things, mostly older programs. For the most part, though, I am satisfied.
I don't see why Win2k would be any better than XP. Any bugs and crap in 2k should be fixed in XP, so if it doesn't cost too much, I'd upgrade.

I've got no complaints with XP, 2K seems to have more compatibility issues w/software while XP is a tad more demanding on the system's resources. Of course with a new system those resources shouldn't be a big issue.

What about privacy issues? I don't really want to give MS any form of unique ID, and I don't really want Media Player 9 leeching stuff out my computer (like I've heard is a 'side-effect')

Well, its required you "activate" windows or it will stop working on your computer. I beleive there is no personal info that is sent, but it maybe sends information about computer parts (not sure of this, just a rumor). It supposively stops you from installing it on multiple machines. I never tired.

Media Player 9 does not come with XP unless they put it on the latest release. I know copies sold now have Service Pack 1 included. Even if it is, you have the option of removing it after loading windows (Go to add/remove programs, windows component tab, and unselect it).

What kind of user are you? Are you more of a Networking type that uses just applications and other things? Or are you just an everday average user that wants to set up a LAN or something like that and play games?

If you are the latter then I would say go with XP Pro.

Either way, both OSes are stable and compatible. It just depends on what you prefer in the end.

We use 2k at work, and IT is moving up to XP Pro. XP seems to be a bit better, but it's nothing I can't put my finger on. I like 2k, but I really like XP Pro. I use XP pro at home.

I don't have any experience with XP Home, but my boss had it, and according to him it was kludge. I don't remember exactly what he said about it, but it was so bad for him he went back to 2k.

Why don't they just wait until 2003 is released? I've checked out the Beta of it at my friends work (he's testing it) and it's super nice. Extremely stable, compatible with every type of network, and it has the features you like in XP plus more.

I think XP Home doesn't have as many networking options. If you choose XP, make sure its Pro or don't bother installing it at all.

Why don't we wait for 2k3? I dunno. I asked one of the networking guys, and he said we go with 'proven and stable platforms.' And yet, we use Windows. . . :rimshot: But seriously, we like to use platforms that have been out there a while, and aren't 'flaky.' My last job, when I quit in June, 2002, they had one 2k server, and the rest were NT4.0. We had about 25 NT servers there. NT4.0 workstations, too. . . I thought 4.0 was okay, until I worked on 2k.

Never touched Home, nor do I intend to. I'll pay the extra 50 bucks to upgrade to XPPro. . .

Well put. :goodjob: I might also add that XP has a much better task manager. The defult apearance is different but you can always change it. Also XP enables remote access.

That's 'cause it's just an intermediate XP release, based on the same core as XP.

It should have a new file system though if it's included :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Incidentally, I just want this new computer for games and 3D modelling - I was going to keep my old one for the internet. How do I activate Windows XP Pro if I don't have an internet connection?
