I do not think we need knowledge of "modern physics" for the trebuchet. Ever heard of the [wiki]Theory of impetus[/wiki]? I hear they went on with that idea for quite a while, but my time is too limited to make a search of the concept.
Why not rename the tech to "advanced artillery machinery" or simply "trebuchet" or something?

No, I don't mean modern physics like quantum mechanics or theory of relativity.
I mean physics that was relatively "modern" for that time.
EX: 18th century, Newton's 3 Laws of Motions would be considered "Modern" Physics.
Anyhow, that theory didn't come about till the 14th century....
But researching "modern" physics leads to the trebuchet and other cool goodies.

50 IC is reasonable for chemistry because technological advances in that field came rather slowly in Europe and lots of people complained about that the tech tree was moving too fast.
