Question about Leader formation

Does having a bunch of armies created at the Military
Academy cut down your chance of getting a great leader
through combat with an Elite unit?

I am asking because the last game I played I made several
great leaders. Then I got Military Academy, pumped out a
bunch of armies and then never got another great leader
through combat even though I attacked many, many (100?)
times with single Elite Modern Armor units.

If having Armies in the field reduces my chances of
getting a great leader, I would just stop making armies
so I can use the leaders to rush wonders.

I haven't noticed that having multipule armies decreases leader generation, however i'm pretty sure that combat odds are figured in leader generation. In other words if the combat is lopsided i think there is less chance of leader generation (although i have no proof of that) so if you were attacking riflemen with those tanks you probably would have a lower chance of seeing a leader.

what i am pretty sure of though is that if you have an unconverted leader sitting around (not hurrying anything or not a army) you can't get another one.

Only one leader at a time. so if that is the case (it's pretty easy to tell from your mil. advisor) you should convert him before you start attacking.

I've never thought of it. But I have had whole games where I only got one, and I had to use it to get an army to build the military academy.

Thanks shuttleswo. Most likely it was the combat odds and
bad luck. Most of the units I attacked with Elite Modern
Armors were rifleman or below. The next time I play I'm
gonna focus on making a lot of leaders with militaristic civ,
Heroic Epic ASAP, and trying to set up weaker elite units to
attack stronger or comparable units with only one hit point left.
Then I'll generate a lot of armies at the Military Academy, try
the same thing and see if there is a difference. Of course, it will
probably take me 20+ hours to run this experiment, but I like
the idea of a great leader factory to help get those wonders
built without removing the focus from military buildup.

I beleive there is a max number of great leaders you can get
but im not sure

I don't know about a "great leader factory," it really all boils down to luck. I play China, a militaristic civ, so I have increased leader chances.

In my last game, I got my first leader early on, still in despotism, and made my first army with archers and spearmen. I built the Heroic Epic immediately. This ended up being a particularly war-mongering game, I was at war more than not. Hundreds, even thousands of elite unit combats (against comparable opponents), and during the course of the game I got two more leaders. Three leaders in one game is actually pretty decent from my experience (my all time best was five), but I would hardly call that a "factory."

I played one game as the Romans (Militaristic) and once had 3 Great Leaders at the same time. (I was conquering my continent, three other civs, all at the same time, and had ALOT of Elite Legions fighting for me.) Anyway, I ended the war with the continent all mine, and SEVEN armies of Legionares. I went on to get a couple more leaders threw some minor skirmishes and used them for leaders. I had gotten three leaders before I built the Heroic Epic too. Just luck of the draw I guess.

Actually, it was my 2nd ever game and I was on Warlord, so perhaps its harder to get leaders on higher levels. On Monarch I seem to get very few leaders, at most 3 or 4 a game.

I'm playing a mammoth game right now:
Huge/16Civs/Regent/patch 1.17f/Japan

At about 1500AD I learned Tank and was 2 advances ahead of any other Civ due to my large, productive nation and aggressive, selective tech trading strategies. Since then I have been
going through the long and laborious task of destroying rival Civs one by one. In the process, I have created huge armies of elite Tanks and now Elite Modern Armor. I have Heroic Epic and, being Japan, am Militaristic. I have disbanded all but one of my Armies
because of the stack movement bug with Armies (don't know if this matters for leader generation).

The last 10 or 20 turns I have produced 1-3 leaders every turn!!!

I must win 20-30 battles with Elite Tank/Modern Armor vs. Infantry every turn and this leads to the high leader output. After I ran out of Wonders to rush I started with Factories, Battleships, and now Nukes and ICBMs. So you can make a "Leader Factory", but it takes a huge map, tons of patience
and elite units to get to the point where you get several every turn.

I think that my stragtegy of using Bombers to support tanks and insure that they are almost always attacking weakened units helps a lot with elite unit and leader formation. Also, I always convert a leader as soon as I possibly can, because you can only have one unconverted leader in your army at a time. So as soon as it pops up I see if I can move him to an appropriate city in one turn. Sometimes I have to conquer the closest enemy city to open up a way out for the leader. If this is the case, I don't attack with Elite units again until the leader is safely converted.

My last turn I made 4 great leaders, each of which created an ICMB. Watch out enemy capitals!!!
