Question about Reputation before contact

I've noticed that there are people in this forum who know everything there is to know about Civ 3, so I've decided to join the community and ask a question that has stumped me for awhile.

I always play using medium sized continents. That means that I am usually on a mid to large sized continent with 2-4 other civs at the beginning of the game. Ocean separates my continent and the civs that live there from the other civs, so there can be no contact with those other civs before the middle ages. I use the Germans, and I always fight early wars using archers, swordsmen, and spearmen. In most games, I have completely conquered my continent before any civs from my continent could contact the civs in the rest of the world. My question is if I destroy the other civs on my continent before any of them make contact with civs on other continents, will I get reputation penalties from my conduct in those wars? If I break peace treaties to conquer my continent before the intial contact, will the other civs know about my bad behavior, or will they treat me as if the other civs on my continent had never existed, ignoring my bad behavior?

Welcome to CFC, Roundman! :D

I have always had the understanding that if you destroy CivA, before CivB knows of him, you will suffer no rep hit. Or in your case, if you destroy *all* the civs on your continent before any of them make contact with the "other" continent, you will be okay. I know this was the case in one game I played a while back, at least.

I *have* heard theories that this is not the case however. Perhaps it was changed in a patch? I will await the "experts" with you. ;)

I'm fairly certain that's one thing they haven't changed in a patch. I thought it was rather nice when the bumped trading contacts back until Writing, it gave me the chance to nail some founding cities before anyone knew they were alive...

How about this, Civ A and Civ B know each other but no one else. You RoP Rape Civ A to kill them but Civ B lives. Now, Civ B gets contact with everyone else. Will Civ B rat you out to the others?

If a Civ does not know what you did to CivB (or CivA), then they will sign RoP's, etc.

As soon as they learn of your "transgression", they will treat you like an outcast.

So it basically boils down to: If you RoP Rape someone, make sure there are no witnesses. ;)

What others have said is correct. I have had sole contact with civs on another continent and they would be polite and gracious towards me. As soon as they contact the civ stuck on a tiny island that I originally drove from my continent they become furious with me even though I never did anything to them.

Glad you edited that. I thought the worst after reading the first sentence.

Anyway I thought it would have been better to make contact anyway. You can make some excellent deals from trading with other nations.

Unless it's somebody like Germany who always seemed to be annoyed with you when you first meet them, even though you havent done anything yet.

I'm fairly certain the AI knows everything you do - - - - it always has.

One related question I have – does this work for the AI when he breaks a treaty with you? I have had a few deals with a Civ before who decided he could no longer afford to pay them and declared war on me.
After this he appeared to continue trading with other civs.
