I know this is a stupid question, but what techs and ships let you transport units across the ocean? The reason I am asking is because the civilopedia is so vast and I want to know ahead of time.

I believe that for most tribes (including America) you need to research a certain tech before the units can swim. Optics? But yes, after that, you don't need to worry about loading the units (military or civilian) onto transports like Civ3 or Civ4.

Yes, units can enter water at Optics, but only coastal (shallow) water. And the unit has to move in one of your cities before it gets the promotion. (So that scout that is clear across the world when you finally research Optics will never swim unless it comes all....the....way....home.)

Then, they can go into deep ocean water when you research Astronomy. Curiously (and as far as I know), if a unit can swim, they can get the deep-ocean ability by passing through ANY friendly territory - a city-state that is friendly or allied, or a civ with whom you have open borders. (But that far-off scout - if he's not home yet, he still can't swim.)

Edit. This is for BNW. I just noticed you have a Vanilla tag, I don't know if its the same in Vanilla. Actually, I'm almost positive that your troops can get the swimming ability by entering your territory or a CS territory that you are friends or allies with. And they don't have to enter any friendly territory to be able to enter Oceans, once you discover Astronomy they can instantly enter the Ocean.
