Question regarding Anarchy

I've been a longtime lurker but never posted. I've run into a topic that I can't find a lot of information on in either the war acedemy or on the forums and finally had to get an account to inquire about it.

In regards to Anarchy when one is playing as a nonrelgious civ, is there anyway to mitigate the effects of the anarch period when switching govs or is it something you just have to ride out? Is there strategies that can be used to prepare for anarchy or during anarchy? I use CivIII vanilla unpatched and play on regent (I've been lazy about downloading the patch). Thanks in advance for any input.

Make sure you have a good food output, so your people don't starve, some luxuries and happiness improvements keep civil disorder at bay. And make sure you turn some of your citizens into specialists like taxmen and scientists without going into a food shortage. This will allow your cities to at least produce something.

there is a "trick" (/exploit/cheat/whatever) that at least gives you two cracks at the number of turns though.

When you discover a govt tech, the game will immediately ask you what to research next. After you choose, but before you close the popup, click "what's the big picture". In the F1 screen fromthere you can launch into an anarchy period. By hitting "more" on the advisor box, you can find out how long it will take you to come back under control.

The "trick" is this: If you draw a long time (say 8 turns), you can take another crack at it. When you close out of that screen, you will immediately get another popup asking if you want to revolt to the new govt, even though you are already revolting. If you click yes, it will reroll the number of turns.

Be warned though:
1. If you draw a medium amount of turns (like 4 or 5), you could end up making things worse.
2. I haven't seen it expressly forbidden, but I would guess that it would be a "banned tactic" in SG's, PBEM's, GOTM, or any other competition.

Be careful with the above trick though - Once, I had a 4 turn anarchy, did the trick, then got an 8 turn anarchy. :/

But, you can still research in anarchy! Just turn your excess citizens into scientists. You can still produce units in anarchy, too! Build and chop down a forest (or disband a unit) so that all the shields are done for a unit. (unfortunately, you can only get the effects of a chopped forest in 1 tile only once).

CT, if you got 4 turns (the minimum) why on earth would you go for the second time?

Hire some scientists and tax collectors in any city with the food to support them. They'll keep your science moving forward (albeit slowly), and a little gold trickling into the treasury.

It is actually allowed in GOTM, although I for one would like it banned.

The 3-tube scientists in C3C certainly make for MM-ing food in each city to get as much science as possible worth it. Though you'll have to balance with Entertainers if you don't have the lux/markets to keep everyone happy.

Length of Anarchy seems to be dependent on size of civilization though. I don't have any hard data to support this, but it seems like you're guaranteed to draw 8 turns when you are huge.

Anarchy (in C3C) is 1 to 5 random turns + 0 to 4 based on number of cities. I could be wrong by 1 or 2 on the numbers, but 9 is the max and 4 is the min.

I am almost certain that it still works in conquests, I am still playing 1.15.
