For that price come to Portugal and you'll be a King! :king: ;)
I think $2,000/month in the Bay Area is a norm. Well, if you can spend that money just on housing, you will be a :king: in most places on earth, not just Portugal, I would say.

I grew up in San Diego.

There's a huge difference between San Diego and LA.

LA is the only place I've known that can have a traffic jam at 2 in the morning for no reason. No accident, no fire, nothing. Just lots of people driving, all the time.

Here's a brief history to give you an idea of what I think of the locations.

I had a job in Downtown San Diego - Everthing was good. We were bought out by a company headquartered in LA. I was given the option to keep my job and move to LA. I found another job.

I actually couldn't afford to do what I wanted in San Diego, so now I moved an hour North East to Temecula. It's great. There are actual trees and the view is something other than houses and cars. You can see the snow on Palomar mountain and it's an hour closer to Vegas. :)

I still work in San Diego, but the commute is well worth the feeling that I've bought a house in Temecula rather than still renting in San Diego. :D

The Los Angeles vicinity is a cesspool but the nearby suburbs and beach communities are interesting. Rent isn't as sky high as the east coast since there are so many options available. NY tends to be much more compacted whereas everything in LA is spread out.
You can have a very high standard of living if you know where to set up shop. The outskirts of LA county can give you a very nice living space which doesn't even look like the city. You can get to and from work usually within 30-40 minutes.

Traffic is a pain in the ass but it's tolerable once you learn the freeway system. Honestly, people on the west coast tend to be more laid back. I've been to NY, jersey, and boston and the people seemed more hard up about everything. I didn't like the east coast "attitude" at all and prefer the west coast way of doing things. We have a lot of stupid politicians and even stupider state laws but that's really the price to pay for living here.

The job market varies widely in LA county so I hope you have a very healthy resume. Silicon valley rejects and ex-dot commers are really a dime a dozen around here. You better have some special skills to make it if you want to do anything related to computers.
