I think the attitude will be the same regardless of the number of troops you actually commit into the war. Basically, you don't have to commit any troop at all and their attitude would still be the same as if you have committed 1000 troops. However, if you play your MPP card right, you should send some fast troops to walk behide your allies...just let them do most of the fighting and killing...and you would wait for the right moment to move in and capture the enemy cities instead. This is one quick to expand your empire.
Hint: Unless you wan to win by the UN, attitude really means nothing!
In that case, I think it may be best if you don't commit any troop into any war unless you have something to gain. Basically, you don't want to risk upsetting any more AIs because after the war is over, your former enemy may become your friend.
PS: I rarely sign MPP with anyone unless I intend to go to war immediately after that. I kind of like the idea of them dying for my causes while I simply relax and move in to take their cities at the right time. If the UN is what I have in mind, I would try to be completely neutral and friend with everyone. Once the UN is about to complete, sign military alliance with everyone who I hope to vote for me and win by the next turn without actually fighting any war.
MPP's and MA's saved me from certain extinction only yesterday. My neighbors attacked me because of my silly pride and overestimating my military force. I managed to keep the damage low, losing only one minor border town, but after turn 5 or 6, I was on my last defending units, and they started to move in a couple of SOD's (stack of death with 30-40 units). They were ready to walk all over me, kept hitting F4 to get them to talk to me and negotiate peace, any peace, but of course they refused to even hear me out.. All of my inland cities were empty, every last man on the front... This is when I spent all of my gold, and maximum GPT, all techs and maps I had to offer, and negotiated MPP's and MA's with everybody else in the game. Came next turn, they were at war with all Civs, felt good not to be alone anymore, and guess what... They received my envoy, accepted a straight forward peace deal, no strings attached, and I was off the hook. Without the MPP's and MA's I wouldn't have had a chance. Needless to say I invested heavily in defense, and soon after I got some sweet revenge.....
I assume you took some attitude hits with your former allies when you made peace with the AI you got them into a war with.
Getting allies and then making peace is not always the best strategy. Admittedly it saved your skin, but would it have been possible to stay at war with all that expensive help and gotten some benefit from the situation other than instant peace?
I was sharing one continent with my adversary, my allies were nowhere near me, and would not have been able to do anything for me. Do they ever? It really was pretty funny how there were roughly a hundred enemy units at my doorstep ready to annihilate me, and I was able to escape destruction. I do wish the whole diplomacy thing was a bit more sophisticated though. Like telling your allies where you need them, when, and which town to attack, or, if peace is achievable, that we could all sit down for peace talks and come up with agreements. If I negotiate peace, why shouldn't all of my allies (who only got into war because of my fight) be able to have peace as well as a result.
Btw, who really cares about attitude hits? If you manage to dominate the world (e.g. the U.S. of A. ), you can pretty much get away with anything - n'est pas?
If you're very strong and domination is not a problem then of course you don't need to worry about reputation . However , to become a strong nation , you need trades and alliances , and if your reputation is damaged , then your task of domination will get more difficult .
hey - thanks for previous answers - it helped a lot
but theres one more thing i am curious about:
is there any possibility to turn off WLTKD, production and pollution massages over cities? in modern times when i have about 60 - 70 cities receiving such things takes me more time than enjoying a war
I thought I read somewhere above in this thread (good luck finding where) that you can change it to turn off the WLTKD messages, but not the pollution/disease/starvation, etc. Unfortunately, the search is disabled....
In all seriousness, unless you play real time MP you will never get to use it. I think it turns off most the 'normal' popup messages you get at the start of your turn (build orders, riot messages, etc).
I don't know what I did, but now the buttons with the unit command are on the right side of my screen instead of the bottom. How do I get them back where they were?
