Welcome to CFC, Sentinel :)
in addition to Turner's post:
Strategic resources never disappear if there's no road (respectively city) on that tile. (Maybe you would not want to connect your only source of a resource before you really need it, or even disconnect/pillage roads if you e.g. notice a Iron Works city site but can't start IW right away).
Rubber and horses a "static", they will never disappear (as Turner said, check editor for depletion odds of the rest in the editor).

Correction: If a resource is attached but the road cut, the resource is still eligible for depletion. Have to look this up, but I'm pretty sure it's still that way.

I don't think that there's some measurement of the amount of resource consumption.
"Connection" is the pre-context, then it's just the random number generator (luck). Note that once a resource disappears, a new one of the same type re-appears elsewhere (sometimes even on the same tile). Working the tile doesn't matter.

I'll admit to doubts about the re-appearence, as well ... based on the fact that I only see resources appear once in three or four games, and see them disappear 4-5 times a game. I'll admit that I don't count AI resources all the time, or even go through them tile-by-tile when one of mine disappears ... but I'm fairly certain that not _all_ of the disappearing resources are replaced ... I once counted 12 iron tiles in an 8-civ game, and when one of mine disappeared, I could then only see 11 (in the world, for both numbers), so I suspect the forced replacement is only if the number of that resource drops below a threshold, probably the number of civs for everything but uranium, where the minimum availability is something like one for every two civs.

I'll see if I can test this out, but I've never used the editor, so it'll take me a bit.

s_e_n_t_i_n_e_l: They dont' just disappear. . . they do reappear somewhere else. Make sure you have an updated WM when checking, otherwise it won't be updated.

I did find the thread I was looking for. I'm sure there's more information out there, but this thread seemed pretty good. This thread goes into resource depletion, as well as some other resource information.

Turner:
You mean road on resource tile, but no connection to trade network?
Then it could deplete AFAIK.
Sentinel:
IIRC, Cracker recently posted a test scenario. I'll try to dig up a link (hope the search function has not depleted... :D ) <edit: I was looking exactly for the thread Turner linked to/posted above :goodjob: >
Number of resource tiles of one kind are indeed dependent on number of civs (large map w/ 4 opponents has way less iron than w/ 11 opponents, for example - you can set that in the editor, too). I'm not sure if re-appearance will be calculated on the actual number of civs in a game (that would explain a drop in total number if civs get wiped out).

Grille: It's in the thread that I linked too. That's the major reason why I chose that thread.

But AFAIK, any road will do it it.

Good point. . . .this may be why.

To be honest, I don't fool with this much. . . keeping track of resources that is. If I loose one, well, I just go on a rightous holy war in and 'liberate' some much needed resources.

Thanks, folks

I supose I had assumed that since you can see all the spots for a resource when you get the tech (if you can see that tile, anyway), I assumed that you could always see resources you had the tech for ...

time to do more map trading, even after I've got a complete world map. I want my coal back, you dastardly french thieves!

Well, in a sense, you can. (It's the eqivilent of 'Oh, so that's what that is. . .) But if you don't have an updated map, you don't get it when a resource pops up. Kinda like having a blank spot in the map and the AI putting a city there. (Although in that situation, I do believe an embassy will update your map for you.)

I do that, too.

The 'good point' was just a vague guessing, since I don't keep track on total numbers of resources either. Now that I think about it, I've had often (non-modded) games with tons of iron hooked up while there were just 2 ai civs left and depletions/re-appearances happened.
So I think the starting number of civs only matters for the total number of resources (not sure if it's always severly constant, though).

edit: AFAIK you do not even need an actual map to locate resources in enemy or neutral territory (of course, you need full geographic knowledge of every land tile = no black spots, that is).
cotrol-shift-m (clear map from cities/improvements) helps to detect resources.

I thought the new patches had reduced the disappearing resources chances to almost nothing, but in one of my current PBEM games I lost my only Iron, with the next a good fight away. :(

It's been a while since I've seen that happen...

Well, it's all listed in the Forum Rules. ;)

But Thunderfall has included a FAQ in Site Feedback to cover the common questions like this.

And yes, you need 300 posts before you can use a Custom (personalized) Avatar.

The link to the "UK PTW 1.27" patch links to the French (1.27F) patch. Should I use the US (1.27f) version?
And should I pm TF about that fault, or is someone else responsible for http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3patches.shtml ?

mrtn, are you sure the patch is the wrong one? That's the one I used and it worked fine. Note the trailing f is not for French, the version number ends in f. The French patch has got TWO trailing F's.

Yes. Note though that captured wonders don't produce culture, only the wonders you build yourself.
