It is <shift-backspace> to move the buttons back to the bottom of the screen.
<Backspace> to move them to the right side

Hi. Thanks for this thread learned answerers!

PTW 1.27f - how do I rename a unit? In particular, units that have created a great leader.

Cheers

1. (This should work on any PC). Hit the "Prnt Scrn" button. Open MSPaint - which you can use the "windows" button for, if you have one - that will bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then use the start-programs-etc. sequence to call up Paint. Hit CTRL-V or "paste" and the screen image will be pasted into Paint. Save it as a jpg file.

2. To display I presume you mean to show the pic here at CFC. Those pics, since there were multiple pics in one post, use the "IMG" tag. If you hit the reply or quote buttons you'll see a new window come up to enable you to post a reply. In the vBcode section is a button for IMG. What these tags do is provide a way to link to a picture and display it in your post. The syntax is:
{IMG}http://www.somewhere.com/filename{/IMG}
but using the [] instead of {}.

For those pictures I uploaded them to CFC - using the "upload file" link at the bottom of most pages. So my IMG tag ended up being something like:
{IMG}http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads5/picture.jpg{/IMG}

3. For cropping, resizing, etc I use a graphics program called MGI Photosuite 4. But you can crop using Paint, too, it's just a more painful process.

4. Not sure there. I use a higheer than normal res to play the game, with keepRes=1 set in the ini file. But I don't find my images any more sharp than most others here.

With a GL you'll get a pop-up automatically to rename the unit if you want.

For any unit (including the GL creators) you just select the unit and hit shift-N and the same pop-up appears.

If you have the "expanded buttons" or whatever it is called selected theres an "ABC" button which does the same as shift-N

Just type the new name you want into the box, hit the "o" button to accept it and the unit is renamed.

X wrapping is when it goes from the left end of the screen back to the right, and vice versa. We've all known and loved this since the first game. Y wrapping goes Top to bottom and vice versa. Interesting things happen when you do this. I did it for a while, but don't anymore.

Randomly generated maps allow you to go off the left or right edge of the map and wrap around to the other side. That is X wrapping.

Y wrapping is where you can go off the north edge of the map and appear in the south. A world with X and Y wrapping at the same time is actually the 3D equivalent of a doughnut shaped world. :D

Trading question if I may – How do you know if a deal you are suggesting is a ‘fair’ deal (even allowing for unfair advantages of the AI.) If you have tech 1 and another Civ has tech 2 and 5 gold and if you offer your tech 1 for sale and the Civ offers his tech 2 plus 5 gold, you have no idea if that is a fair price.

Maybe it is worth his tech plus 30 gold, or even worth 2 techs.

If the AI has sufficient gold such that the maximum he will offer is his tech plus part of his gold, then you know you got a fair deal. The AI always knows the exact value of a tech whereas we have no idea. I can judge later in the game what a tech is worth for me, but cannot do so early in the game.

And don’t you just hate it when you are called ‘generous’ by the AI?

Hi

I havnt decided to buy this game yet because of one reason. I want a game where the computer takes control of MORE than 8 nations (which is normal in all games). Ive heard that in single player mode with a giant map, civ3 allows 16 players to participate, but not in multiplayer mode. Is this correct or can one have 16 players human and computercontrolled in multiplayer?

To moderator, Im sorry if this message is posted on the wrong forum.
[color=600f0f]No problem. I just merged it into the Quick Answers (Newbie Questions) thread. ;) --Padma[/color]

Hi, Korre, welcome to CFC!

I don't play MP so I don't really know, but the reason I don't play MP is because it's buggy, crashy and stinks. At least the PTW does. However, the Conquests XP is coming out soon and will have a new MP engine. You may want to wait until it comes out and see what happens...

Greetings, KB.

So does one assume correctly that you don't own Civ3 or Civ3:Play The World?

I play PBEM (Play By E-Mail) and we have as many AI opponets as we want. I've never tried to set it up for more than 6, but it might be able to be done. I don't play real time MP because I dno't have the time for it. But PBEMs can be very satisfactory, and there's nothing saying that you can't do more than one at a time. I have five going right now myself, and am always interested in picking a couple more up.

In any event, the SP (Single Player) improvements made by PTW have made it more than good to get. There were a lot of improvements, with more units, more civs, better AI, more city improvements, worker actions that were made, and it made SP quite enjoyable to me until I decided to play PBEM.

Don't even get me started on Double Your Pleasure. This added a lot more to Civ3, and made the game more enjoyable to me.

So I would say, if you've got the bucks to burn, go ahead and get Civ3 and PTW. Or wait for Civ3:Conquests to come out, and get Civ3 & C3C.

I don't think you're be disappointed.

How, exactly, does PBEM work?

I played one turn, then email the game to you. You play your turn, then email the game back to me and so on. Since each player is protected by a password, if you forget your password, game is over.;) For more information, check out the PBEM forum.

How can I get some friggin gold and keep it? I'm SO frustrated right now... I am playing as Germany, and I'm trying to win my first game without cheating. I got off to a good start, and ended up on a good sized continent with only one neighbor. (Russia) I managed to destroy them and take all of their stuff, but now, I have my research set to 50%, and my happiness set to 20%. I'm currently making 5 gold per turn. But, I don't want to get behind in techs, so I need to increase science funding. But, if I even make it go up 10% more, I start losing 11 gold per turn! I don't understand!!! Please, somebody help me.

This kind of question is better suited for the Quick Answers thread, but I'll answer it here.

First of, realize that science is driven by commerce, and commerce is driven by the amount of tiles and how your work them. It does no good to have 20 people out there working tiles if you haven't improved them. So make sure all of your tiles are at least roaded. This will increase the commerce you make on each tile, increasing the amount of money you make and the amount of money you can spend on science. The more money you make, the more improvements you can build, the larger army you can support, and the more you can devote to science.

Basically, you need to make sure that you have at least marketplaces in all cities. Not only does this increase the base commerce by 50%, but it also increases happiness. At 3 to 4 lux's, you get two happy faces each, 5 to 6 three happy faces each, and 7 to 8 four happy faces each. This will make your city happier and you spend less money on the lux slider. Banks will also increase the base commerce by 50%, as well as Commercial docks (in PTW.)

Also, your government dictates how much commerce you make. Well, not reall, but it does influence it. In despotism and anarchy, you lose one commerce per tile worked. In communism and monarchy there are no penalties or bonus', and in Republic and democracy you get one extra commerce per tile. This can add up quite a bit.

So basically make sure that you have marketplaces, your tiles are roaded, and that you get out of despotism. This should be a good starting point for you, and you can expand on these concepts more as you learn the basics.

Hope this helps, and good luck. Feel free to ask again if you need more clarification.

Only thing I would like to add to the remarks of Turner_727 is:

Build courthouses in your cities. Mainly those who are futher away from your capital city. A courthouse reduces corruption and hence reduces commerce wasted to corruption.

I must however point out that this will not add very large amounts of cash to your treasury. First road your tiles, build marketplaces and make sure you have a monarchy government! Then start building Courthouses.
