hi there,

this is probably in the wrong thread and been asked before...but ive been searching for 30mins and i only have 15 mins battery left on my laptop. Two things really. Corruption, ive read how it works and understand it but geez man, i dont like it. Yes CIV2 was too easy but i feel theyve gone two far, anywhere above monarch and it just gets silly. Anyway, I heard a rumour theres a patch thats gonna reduce the effects...one of the civ team said in an interview that they were gonna reduce its severity. anyway, on to my question, when and how can i get this patch, and secondly do you have any tips for dealing with it now...i have a city overseas and the corruption is ridiculous, it might as well not be there.

Help much appreciated

Try to trigger a 'We love the king day' in your remote cities. They have to be size 6 at least. This reduces corruption dramatically.
About the patches, on the front page in the left column (or just click here) you can find all existing patches. There will be no new patches for ptw and vanilla, only for conquests.

Yep, install latest patch (corruption/waste used to be worse in civ3 1.07).

deal with corruption:
"ring city placement"
Also look at other threads in the strategy articles section, such as alexman's corruption thread or Qitai's rank exploit thread.

Note that We-Love-The-King-Day reduces waste (=wasted shields), not corruption (=commerce). ;)
 
Can anyone give me a more or less exact definition when that pentagon-like intel agency icon appears next to a rival's capital name?

I suspect it's either when you have planted a spy there or when that certain rival has built IA anywhere (or has planted a spy in your capital??).

I guess PBEM players could answer this *easily*. :D
 
My last PTW game took 32 hours to complete... how is this figure calculated? When saving a game, does it just add on the time since the last load?
 
Yep. Every time you load a save it starts the counter off from where it left off.
 
Thank you Grille and Shabbaman. Thats made it an even better game for me. You know i used to think i was good at this game but i now see i have much to learn. Is there a community of people taht play over the net? Ive never done this before but it seems to me it would be a hell of a lot better (rational trading and diplomicy for a start!) Do any of you play over the net...whats it like?

Should i be asking this in a different forum...probably!

You can ask here. It's what the thread is for. Should you need a more detailed answer, we can direct you to it.

We have a multiplayer forum here, for both online and PBEM (Play By Email) games, and there is all the democracy games and Succession games. Demo is when everyone votes, and succesion is when people take turns with the same civ.

You're more than welcome to use these forums for anything civ releated. Wouldn't be much of a fanatics center if you couldn't, would it? ;) But we love civ here, and this is the place to talk about it.

Is anyone else unable to vote? When ever I try to vote it says something about my current session and when I try again I get the same screen... any help?

I am new to the boards. A little background information about my Civilization gaming experience...well I didn't have any until about 2-weeks ago when I picked up CivIII and PTW at the local shop. Now I am playing my first real game and I'm desperately trying to get the hang of it.

Now for my questions:

1) In the event of a city under 'Civil Disorder', once you turn one of your citizens into an entertainer (or tax collector, scientist) can you at some point turn him/her back into a 'normal' citizen?

2) Once a citizen has been turned into an entertainer does your city production drop?

Firstly, welcome to CFC! :D

1) You can set your citizens to 'work' tiles in your cities by clicking on a tile in the city screen. You can make them entertainers by unselecting tiles. You can do this every turn, and it is a good idea to check each city at the end of your turn to make sure that you have enough happy people to stop civil disorder.

2) City production, growth (food), and commerce are collected by your working citizens, from the tiles your citizens are working in the city screen. If a citizen is made in to an entertainer you have to remove it form working a tile, so there is a drop in what your city collects.

You should check the FAQ as well - it has good basic info.

Right click on the city, click on Contact the governor, and set manage citizens moods to yes. This will take care of your civil disorder problem.

Yep, but it will also take away an important part of the game, IMHO.

Using city governors will manage your citizens, but it will also stop you from making the best choices for each city. The governor has no concpet of how to 'govern' a city with high corruption, they also run a food surplus when you can't grow anymore and should be maximising shields, they make *very* bad selections in general.

It does take more time to manage your cities yourself, but it will help you understand the game concapts a whole lot more if you do.
 
That is True Anarres, but for the most part they do a pretty decent job, what I do is a "mix" I have most of my cities governed by the governors and some certain ones (i.e. ones on the coast that the governors all want to work the sea's) I manage myself.
 
I think that using governors to manage population mood has its place. Early on your civ "career", it can be useful as you learn the other mechanics of how the game is played; one less thing to micro-manage. ;) And for some (many?) players this is the level of management they want, in order to have *FUN*.

But maybe, after you lose out on another Great Wonder by one turn, and you look at your Wonder-City, and see that it has two entertainers, who *could* have been working those iron mines, letting YOU get the Wonder, you may decide to start managing more of your citizens yourself. Learn to use the Lux slider efficiently. War or trade to get more luxuries. For some of us, the citizen management is an integral part of the *FUN*.
