It could be that the tech you're switching too is cheaper, and therefore it looks like you're keeping the old research, but in fact you're starting over and don't have as much to research.

The more people that know a tech, the cheaper and easier it is to research.

I did a quick test to see if a size 1 capital was considered a city.

50 Chinese warriors outside Moscow, defended by 50 Russian warriors, all regulars. Terrain is desert modified to be +0% defense. Chinese warriors dealt 106 hps of damage, while Russian warriors dealt 109 hps of damage. Chinese warriors won 24 battles, and Russian warriors won 26 battles. Chinese warriors promoted nine times. Russian warriors promoted nine times naturally, and once forced.

Capitals are towns no matter what they look like. :p

Is it me, or sometimes when I switch to another tech, I lose no beakers and the turns left on researching stay the same= no wasted beakers?

This is easy to check. Load up CAII and select Tech, it will show the beakers accumulated. Switch and check again.

Hi guys,

I am brand new to the whole Civ universe. I've only played a few games of Civ III so far, and i'm already irrevocably hooked.

There's one problem I seem to keep having, however. No matter how many cities I have, workers I do or do not have, units/buildings I build, or where my science and happiness sliders are, I just cannot seem to stay in the black on gpt. I start losing money at a more and more rapid pace and I'm at a loss as to why. I've even tried moving my units outside of my cities since i thought it might cost more to garrison them there. Still no luck. I've tried being very careful where I place my cities (trying to get as many resources as possible). No matter what I try, I just keep losing gold.

Is this just something very basic that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Could you post a .sav so we can see what you might be doing wrong? You might have too many units for your unit support.

It's not where you build you cities, it's how many you have.

It's not where you put your units, it's how many you have.

Basically, if you want to make money, get into Republic, road all your worked tiles, build marketplaces, turn off science, use the luxury slider to control happiness, build cities at a CxxC density, don't build wonders, focus on growth of population, and concentrate on mobile troops instead of defenders. You do not need a single defensive unit until Infantry arrive, actually.

What Tomoyo said will work. You could ease up on a few things here and there and squeeze in a wonder or two, if you want.

You start in despotism and this is the poorest form of government other than anarchy. So research Republic and switch.

F1 will let you see where you income is spent. It will be science, corruption, maint, entertainment and support. There are a few other things, but we can ignore them for now.

The best thing is to increase your income. That means more towns and cities. More pop working tiles.

Structres such as markets and banks to multiply net income. Sometimes courthouses can help reduce corruption and hence increase net.

Libs can increase research, but all structures need to be justified. The lower the level, the less you need military, unless you are going to smash your neighbors.

Once you get to the 1/2 the OCN ( a msg tells you that you can build the Forbidden Palace) build the FP. Its placement is important in C3 and PTW, but not real critical in C3C. It increases your OCN and that lowers corruption a bit, hence more net.

Thanks to all who took the time to respond. I took your advice and was doing just fine in the treasury department, but my military was seriously lacking. I think it's just gonna take a lot of practice to learn the intracacies of the game and fine tune how I play it. Don't think I've ever seen a game this complex, and I considered myself pretty good at AOE II. Civ blows it out of the water. Too bad I didn't discover it sooner.

This game is digital crack, though. Just wish I didn't discover it during law school finals!

I've read about a Utility program that will generate maps while I sleep (or go do something else). What is the name of this program, and where is it located?

As vmxa said, it is called MapFinder, created by Dianthus and Moonsinger, and it can be found here.

What is the name of the file with the outpost graphic?

The file is called x_airfields and detect.pcx, in your C:/Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Civ3PTW/Art/Terrain/ folder.

When you research Integrated Defence do you get a bonus free tech ?

Because that is what happened to me and i looked in the editor and it did NOT have the Bonus Tech tag checked.
Note: Yes it was a (my) mod but there was no wonder built that turn, and i surely did not check the Bonus Tech tag - that is why i was shocked.

But i just said i did not ... :hmm:
Oh wait, i understand what you mean :hammer2:.
I "looked" at the tag and the box was "unchecked". That is what i actualy ment. :crazyeye:
