I have never been able to figure out how to use mapfinder and manually exploring and discarding maps is a pain that gets more frustrating every day. However can you save the auto file of starts on a desktop and transfer them to a laptop by way of a "data traveller for later use?

You mean a flash drive? As long as both computers are running the same version, it's no problem, some of us are already doing that. And yes, Mapfinder is a PITA, I never got it to work either.

I am using MapFinder for HOF starts.........Am no expert, but perhaps can help...........As long as you are not going for my records!! :mischief:

What seems to be the problem?

At least for me, it would not save any results, and most of the option boxes were grayed out. Maybe it wsn't run correctly, I was running it as an .exe and it sort of took over my computer, the only way to shut it off was to restart my computer.

In the thread HoF Map Finder/Generator Utility, starting at Post #963 (Page 49, currently the next to last page), gmaharriet gives a detailed, step by step walk through of how to get MapFinder up and running. The rest of the page is helpful, too, as others use the program and have questions about the setup.

I found out one interesting thing. I had downloaded an older version of Mapfinder, one that didn't work properly. I will have to investigate further...

I tried following that guide and the next morning when I restarted I got the blue screen of death. I had to delete that save file that she recommended from that location. Any other location will not be recognized by the program.

Maybe I should give it another try but it was such a bother that it keeps me from doing so.

Just a question, but what happens to the computer when you get the blue screen of death? What is the main cause of it? Hardrive failure or something?

how do you build a forbidden palace?
i believe i'm on a huge map and i have 73 cities, which is well over the OCN, right?

Some comments on MapFinder:

1. You MUST have the correct directory in the MF Setup-General-Autosave Directory. This is the same Foldername where your version of Civ 3 defaults to saving games when you hit Ctrl-S.

2. If you run MF long enough, your computer WILL freeze up. My understanding is that it "leaks" memory and eventually there are not enough resources available to run it & Civ 3. I have some pretty old computers running it and they will run for about a week before they freeze.

3. To make sure you have everything set correctly, let MF run for a while (i.e. 5 minutes) with an always TRUE condition like Domination Limit > 0. If it doesn't save every map, something's amiss.

4. I'm using version 6.4 with Windows XP and it works like a champ. Could not have finished a game in 3800BC without it! :mischief:

@sarahtc: Welcome to CFC. [party] :band:

You have more than enough cities to build the FP. (Size doesn't matter.)

Go to the City Screen for any of your cities and scroll down the Production Box pop-up screen. You should see the FP at the bottom(?). :)

thanks for the welcome :)
the FP doesn't appear in the production box at all. i'm in 1290 AD now in mid-industrial age. could there be anything i'm missing?

Well, there may be something we're both missing!.....In which case, someone will provide the answer soon enough.

However, if you'd like to upload a .SAV file of your game here, we should be able to figure it out! :)

P.s. The only city where the FP won't appear on the Production Box Pop-up screen is your Capital City.

Thanks for the file.

I see you're playing a non-standard game. (Viz. The Food & Production boxes are on Accelerated Production.).....And your Science Tech Tree is non-standard/not the latest!? (Viz. there are arrows pointing nowhere, Radio is defunct in the latest version, no Civilopedia entry for Secret Police HQ.)

Can you expound on this? :)

my game is on chieftain mode with accelerated production.

this is one of the first games i made after the tutorial level a few weeks ago, so i can't remember much about the settings. i might have unchecked one of the victory conditions for all i know; could that have something to do with it?

i'm not sure what you mean about the tech tree though. i haven't modified the game in any way (no expansion packs either), not until i get the hang of things at least.

@sarahtc: I took a look at your save file and it appears you have already built the Forbidden Palace in Antioch in 320AD. The govervnor will often set production to this for you automatically and might have done this without your notice, perhaps?

Edit: Looks like PrinceMyshkin cracked the problem! :goodjob:

When I said you were playing a non-standard game, I should have said I thought you weren't playing the latest version of Conquests. You can download version 1.22 for free at this site. ;)

Happy Civving sarahtc.

!!! PrinceMyshkin, you're right! how did you find that? i never would have caught that on my own!

but then, that means i can't move the FP over to the other continent then? or, do i have to destroy it first somehow?

nonetheless, thank you, especially to EMan, for your time and help! it's such a newbie problem, but it had me stumped for weeks!:blush::blush:
