If you disband a unit (yes, Workers are units ;)) in a city, then some portion of their Shield cost is returned to that city (one quarter, IIRC) and is applied toward whatever that city is currently building...
25% is Correct, rounded down.

P.s. You will NOT get the shields in a city producing a Small or Great Wonder....and if you're producing Wealth, don't forget to change that or you'll only get 1 shield.....which you get anyways...........unless you're in Anarchy! :)

If you disband the unit outside of your city, you'll get Nothing.......well except, maybe, more gpt! ;)

are conquests and play the world different games in and of themselves? i think it was padma told me that when you buy civ3 complete at the store, you get three discs in the box...if they're not seperate games, why seperate discs?

also, as a few of you guys know, i'm the gullible old fool who bought my civ3 vanilla online...but i saw on amazon i could buy ptw for like 4 bucks...is this a good buy? do you think it'll work on my--i guess--pirated version?

If you bought it online, it isn't a pirated version but i doubt a store bought PTW or Conquests will work with it. PTW and Conquests are expansion packs that require vanilla Civ3 to be already installed.

That's what it takes to load all the info for Vanilla Civ, PTW & Conquests. After installation, you put 1 cd in the drive and then you can play any of the 3 versions. Vanilla Civ is the "Base Program"; PTW & Conquests are Expansion packs. (viz. Later versions of Vanilla with more features and less/different bugs! :mischief: )

Civ 3 Complete includes the Final Patches for Vanilla, PTW & Conquests, so you won't have to download any. :)

well, from what everyone has been saying, it sounds like i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and acceot that i made a mistake (in buying regular civ3 online) and then go to walmart and but "complete". waste of thirty bucks, but we live, we learn right?

its all right tho...to be honest, i've got my hands plenty fullright now just trying to get the hang of vanilla! i've probably played almost 30 hours and i gaven't even finished my first game yet. so i'll probably wait until i get bored with the civs in vanilla before i buy the expansion-included version, at which point i'll just give my downloaded version to my little brother or something. might get him interested in something besides cartoons for a change :)

It sounds like you looked it up right. Check thier driver archive for the latest WHQL (i think that's it) driver. Actually the warning just means the version hasn't passed certain microsoft testing yet and you can probably use it ok. Since you have an older card, you don't necessarily need the latest driver either. I have a GeForce Ti 4200 running driver version 45.23 which is plenty good enough for civ3 although i haven't tried any newer games.
Well my problem was that after I had the computer reparierd (about a year ago) I could not play games I have played before. I fugured it must be a driver problem that I am still not able to fix until now.... I will try and install the latest driver that supports my card and hope for the best......
*fingers crossed* :thanx: :)

EDIT: Well I updated it..... Civ PTW still doesn't run :(....

@shawntown: Hey it's Xmastime.......you could bite the bullet (OR, lobby a close relative) and spend $50 for Civ 4 (FOUR), [Civ 3 is already 4 years old!].........then you'd be a Civ 4 Newbie like the rest of us!! :mischief:

EMan...dude, i've seen the trailer...it made me drool, and i wasn't even a civfan then. but i have a dell laptop (and not the 9600 thing thats designed specifically for video games, either)...not enough memory for civ4. after i play civ3 awhile longer, tho, i might look into what is needed for me to get up to specs (i don't know alot about stuff like ram, and buying more memory, and video n' audio cards....i have no clue about any of it).

any pointers, though, (or good places to look up/find out about video game-related computer tech) would be much appreciated.

Yahoo!!!! Re-installed the game after getting the new driver and it worked!!!!! ::beer:
watorrey and Imperial :thanx: thank you very many many times :D

are there any good articles/advice on this website (or any other) concerning the use of the civ3 editor? i've looked in the FAQ and elsewhere...i got nada.

One more interesting thing: flash autorun window does not react when I click on "play the game"
I forget if reinstalling has been suggested. The other problem could be with the copy protection. Some cd drives have trouble seeing the disk. If you have more than one cd drive, make sure the disk is in the one you installed it from.

Alright, me friend told me bout this one, thought I'd throw it out there.

Scenario : He conquered a greek city with his roman musket man, they sent a hoplite and had it attack the musketmen, and won.. from what I'm to understand that should be impossible - little help oh wise ones?

Combat is accomplished using the Random Number Generator. There is very definitely a non-zero chance that A-1 can beat D-4 enough times to win, especially if the Hoplite was Veteran or Elite, and the Musket was only Regular.

Forces that *shouldn't* be able to win have done so in real history. If it helps, think of it as the Hoplites sneaking into the Musketmen's camp while they slept, and overpowering them. ;)

Civ4 alleviates this seeming problem to a great extent. Very rarely will an Ancient unit be able to defeat a later unit. And the greater the discrepancy between their Ages, the less likely it is.

Just like any other unit. In the city that has the MA you will see a selection for army. Pick it and it will be built.

Note you cannot build an army, if you do not have enough towns. It is four towns per army. So if you have 3 armies alread and 12 or 13 or 14 or 15 towns, you have to wait till you get the 16th.

I just got Civ 3 complete, I thought I saw that you could choose what version of Civ you could play, ex. PTW. I can't find a way to do that, could you point me in the right direction? Thanks
