Question: Is it possible to win at the Deity level without producing a leader?

I'm playing Civ3 vanilla, version 1.29f.

I'm a culture-loving Bablyonian peacenik. One of my problems is that I only fight when forced to do so, or when I am reasonably confident of success. This strategey, however, means that I rarely produce a leader. As a consequence, I never manage to build Great Wonders, and corruption runs amok (The region that would benefit the most from a Forbidden Palace is the region where it takes the most time to build the Forbidden Palace.) Is there any hope for me?

How do I ever start (and win) a war a with the AI, while playing at the Deity level, when the AI greatly outnumbers me and is full Age ahead of me in the technology race?

Question: Which technologies cost the most/take the longest to research?

I'm playing Civ 3, vanilla, version 1.29f.

I've noticed that I, invariably, get bogged down when researching Monarchy and/or Republic. It always seems to take a full 40 turns (unless I really push the tech budget). Which other techs require this level of time and money, and, conversely, which are the least costly techs?

Question: Which techs should I research as opposed to purchase?

I'm playing Civ3, vanilla, version 1.29f.

As noted earlier, I get bogged down when researching Monarchy and/or Republic. I am thinking of forgoing research into these techs. Additionally, I am wondering if it is wise to research those techs that do not have a practical benefit. For exmaple, Mysticism and Polytheism do not result in a resource appearing on my map, nor do they lead to a city improvement. Might it be better strategy to merely purchase those techs instead of taking the time to research them? I've found that it is when I do reseach those techs, that is when I begin my precipitous fall behind the AI? Any suggestions or comments?

I can't answer the part about never having a leader. I never manage to avoid fighting. The trick is toget teh fights on your terms. Get them to attack where you are aboe to do damage.

Funnel them trough places where you have strong defenses and bombardment units (cats/cannon). Pick off wounded.

Or they are forced to attack your stack and you have def bonus (hill/forted/river and such).

Now get your leader. Earlier wars should see some stragglers, not big stacks. Get some leaders and make some armies. Use hit and run tactics. Send pillagers over to cut resources and lux tiles

Well as a rule as you move up the tiers they cost more beakers. If you want to knwo exactly what they cost, it varies with the levle and map size.

You can check in the editor or grab a tool from the utilities that can give you the number.

The real issue is why you are not producing more income to make the research faster? I it is either a lack of good locations, too high of maint cost, or a lack of improvements. It could be all three.

You can't forego both of them, only one or the other. You must get out of despotism asap. The AI will not be selling or trading either until it is either very obsolete or at least the HG is built.

You will not be able to get those techs, unless you have something very good to deal with.

They are not optional techs and you need to get them to get to the next age. So try to research a tech that can be traded to get them, such as currency or construction or CoL. Beeline to something to trade.

Note do not hold any monopoly or near monoploy tech for long at deity in vanilla. It will soon be degraded in value.

If I settle on a BG(I know I shouldnt...), will I still get the shield from the BG in my city tile?

Depends on your definition of "fighting". ;)

THere have been some great games recorded where the human player has not built *any* military units, and WON!

(For instance Charis' Mongolian Peace Corps. :D )

Is there any way to see all the resources under other civs cities without having to look at the terrain under each one individualy as that seems to take far too long?

P.s I'm playing Conquests vanilla version.

Is it that you only benefit from the free dams from Hoover dam if you have a river and a factory in that town?

As far as "absolutely needing to get either republic or monarchy".. feudalism IS a government type and DOES free you of resource restrictions. Plus its one of the only one that you get from a mandatory tech and it comes right at the beginning of the middle ages. I've not used it before and am not sure what circumstances it would be good in, but it could serve to substitute for republic/monarch if you wished to skip researching them.

No, you get a Hydro plant in all cities, regardless if they are by a river. However, you DO need a factory in order to get the 50% boost from the hydro plant.

Well..
A. You can't use a military leader to build great wonders, only small ones. The forbidden palace is a small one of course.

As far as getting the forbidden palace up..I know in conquest the most important thing is just to get it up. Not as much finding the perfect place for it. You could compromise and find a city the FP would work good in and might build it in reasonable time. I think in both plain and conquest you don't want your FP too far away anyways.

Don't forget, scientific leaders CAN build GW's, you get them by being first in a tech.
