Thanks Tone :). That's what was the problem, I didn't have show wonder initiation Pop-Up on. But if it pops up and says that a civ is building a wonder, would you risk trying to build it faster than that civ? What I would do, If it show s the name of the A.I's city that is building the wonder, I would investigate it and check how many turns it has left to comleteing the wonder. Then I would compare which one will be completed faster. If the A.I will build the wonder faster, then I would switch to something else.

If I'm playing on Emperor or lower, I'll check what city my rival is building X wonder in, check its size, its improvements, do some rough calculations, and if I am producing roughly equal or lower shields (assuming AI going for max shields), I'll go for it. On Demi-God and higher, I usually find it isnt worth the effort.

I pretty much agree with what's been said already. Do a rough calculation, investigate the city if things could be close and I have nothing to cascade to and even consider some sabotage strategies such as a direct attack or the more subtle approach of stopping the trade of a lux that is keeping some of their people from rioting. Often none of this is needed as the AI can attempt to build wonders in the most stupid of locations.

On typing this, I've just realised that I've never tried to sabotage wonder production by espionage. Has anyone else tried it?

It's extremely (and prohibitively) expensive to do, if I remember correctly.

Yes many times, but not in a while. It is expensive, but to stop a wonder like the UN or the Manhat I do it at times.

Sabotage Production 10 dist*level + base * shield

so as you can see it can vary a lot as to the cost. I recall paying around 5K a few times.

I started another war with the aztecs but this time it was because they had oil and I didn't. So I came in with lot's of cav's and arty's and when I captured one of their cities it had three wonders in it. Smith's Trading Company, The Oracle and Leonardos Workshop. And I also gained two sorces of oil, one from capturing a city and the other just appeared in fron of one of my cities. That's what conquering can do :D.

Sabotage Production 10 dist*level + base * shield
or even 'dist*level + 10* shield' as the base level is 10. ;) Success is not guaranteed either so it could be money thrown down the drain.

I know the theory but for some reason I tend to forget about this option when I'm actually playing. I was just wondering whether other players bothered with it. I can see that it is still worthwhile in some cases such as the ones you mention, vmxa, although the comment that you haven't done it for a while suggests that you have developed more skillful ways of dealing with the problem. (Or am I failing to read between the lines correctly?)

Mostly I have been playing in Greebleys SG's lately and they are AW on oversized maps with max civs. These games do not get that deep into the tech tree.

In my Sid games I am usually able to be right with the AI on modern techs, if playing conquest/dom. That means I can build the UN first with a pre, if needed.

The Project, I can ignore now as it is easier to cut the Uranium as the game is down to a few civs by then. I am not doing AW, but I do not give peace after the industrial age.

So at Sid the AI will not have any workers and not be able to fix any cut roads. They tend to choke themselves with units and cannot even clean off the polluted tiles.

Often I will have lots of cash as I tend to go no research late in the game and steal only, after all I will already be at war with them, so nothing to fear getting caught.

I would not hesitate to use sabotage if I had no other way to prevent ICBM's.
I have been unable to do anything and they did get off a few nukes. It is a pain, but if you get your workers to a safe palce, it is not hard to recover.

I send in enough workers to road and rail all tiles and mine or irrigate in one shot. Add in workers and the cities is back up. Where as the AI will not have workers and can not recover.

Still I prefer not to get to this point. It is hard to end the game before modern times via conquest though as they just have too many units to kill.

When you complete a wonder, an in-game check is made to see if you own wonders that match all your traits. If all traits are matched, you get a GA (as long as you've not had one already of course). It doesn't matter who built the wonders in the first place and it doesn't matter if the wonder that you've just built doesn't match either of your traits.

Thanks for the info :goodjob:

How do I up my game? I just moved up to Monarch level and AI is always way ahead of me regards researching techs. I don't get to badly bitten when I switch to Republic, marketplaces help there, but by then I am really behind in both growth and research. What do I do or am I not doing??

Also, does the science "bar" under commerce in each city affect how fast you research as a whole? What specifically does that area show/do?

Mike

Graemike,
If you want to improve your gameplay as a whole, I suggest: (1) start a game; (2) play 60-80 turns; then (3) start a thread. Post the original (4000BC) save and the save after 60-80 turns. That will let some people around here download your save where they can really get a look at your empire and what's going on. If you look around, you'll see several threads like that at any given time.

As for the "science bar," look to the right. There should be a number next to the beaker. It shows how many beakers per turn that city is generating. Each tech requires a certain number of beakers to achieve it. More beakers = faster research.

Edit: If you start your own thread, I also suggest including specific questions or areas that you want advice on.

@ Graemike - Yeah, do what Aabraxan says. :D

I found that one of the most important things to do on moving up from Regent (which I only did recently) was to start trading techs round to everyone whenever you get a chance. Playing Monarch or above is almost impossible if you try to remain insular - you have to start manipulating the AI. And don't necessarily get downhearted if you find yourself falling behind. Try to find ways of catching up rather than starting afresh.

Monarch Level: One way to "catch up" on the Tech Race is to build horsemen and capture/raze AI cities. After a while the AI will give you his Techs in return for Peace. ;)

I will do that new game and post a thread. How do I post the saves? I am not so tech savvy. Me Thag - me make-um fire, is more my speed  but with a little instruction I'm good to go. I don't game alot everyday and stuff but won't take much more than a week + to see results.

Thanx for the assist

Mike

When you post a reply to a thread, you will see a button called "manage attachments." Click it and follow the instructions. It's easy and self-explanatory. The "upload file" button at the bottom of the page can be used too, but it is slightly more complicated.

Hello, I didn't see this one until I had posted a new thread.

I am a newbie and "still wet behind the ears".... so please forgive... Should I repost my questions here?

Welcome to CFC, BavariaValkyrie!

Should you repost your questions here? Depends on the question. If it's something like "how do I upgrade a unit?," then yes. If it's "how do I maximize gold to boost my economy?," that's probably better off in its own thread.

Since your other thread has taken off, so to speak, just keep your questions there. That thread has become a "Help BavariaValkyrie Play On Warlord" thread. ;)

@ PADMA Thanks for the welcome. Am gracefully surprised at the feedback I had so far. I cannot believe the addiction factor of both the game and this website. Whatever happened to my other hobbies.... but then again, the weather is awful so sitting indoors playing Civ is just perfect! :D

Still... I have a question that I hope you can help me with:
I tried to swap cities with the Iroquois as I had settled on their continent and they may well want that city anyway, and in return they had just settled on a tiny (tundra) island north of my continent. (I want that island because I'm sure there'll be oil on it later...)
Whenever I approach Hiawatha he says "this can't be done". Does one have to have a special tech in order to swap cities? Or is warmongering the best way to get cities?
