Hi all..... New to the site

Used to play Civ2 manicaly, missed out on 3 and just got hold of civ4.. :-))

Couple of questions if anyone can help with. Have the game, but came with no manual. Is there a link anywhere to a pdf, txt file or something. I have checked on the disk and the installation folder.

Also in Civ2 there was an advancement chart (think it was called) so you could work out what you needed to invent etc.... Is there one for Civ4 anywhere

Cheers in advance for any help with this
This is the tech tree link: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/techtree/

If they develop or not is irrelevant (because you can't benefit from them), so I was thinking: Has either of you tried to built a city next to a fully developed town outside the fat cross of your original town? Does it stay a town or does it go back to a mere cottage?

It's not irrelevant, because you could have cottages built on workable squares before you have the population to work them. Whether they will grow on their own or not would make a difference.

I see all leaders have their favorite Civic and I see in the mod forum there is a lot of discussion as to what a mod civ should have for a favorite civic, but what is the bonus of a favorite civic other than if your civic matches the leader your speaking with he'll be more impressed with your choice of civic? Is there any kind of tangible bonus or is this kind of a useless piece of information?

Thats about it, as far as I know.

You get a diplomacy bonus when the civ you're dealing with has similar civics. A leader will probably stop at his favorite civic. Since you have to have multiple civics in common (I heard 3) to improve relations, having hereditary rule won't even help you that much with Egypt. It's a way to give AI leaders some personality and have it impact how their civs develop, it doesn't affect human players that much.

I read somewhere there is a new hotkey command in 1.52 for workers that will automate them but prevent them from chopping forests. Does anyone know it?

Thanks much for your help in advance!

Is that how they did it, hotkey only? I heard that was an option and was frustrated not to see it.

Great, thanks man! Another question: Is there any use or negative effects with placing cottages/farms/etc outside of a city's fat cross (the 21 squares of the city)? I have some cottages that are connected to cities by roads but outside of its work range. They seem to be developing into towns anyway...

No, there's not much use to placing them there. And they won't grow.

A cottage tile has to be being worked by a city, and so inside the fat cross to grow at all. There is no way for it to develop otherwise. Placing them outside the fat cross is therefore fairly pointless, since they'll just sit there as cottages until a city is founded nearby and can use the tile.

Civ4 still has a lot of hiccups on my computer, which is new and exceeds all the specs. I patched to v1.52, might it help if I returned the disks and got new ones that came out after the patches, at least the first one? I don't know much about software and whether the installation with the patches already worked in might make a less tangled program than the heavily patched original installation.

I don't think there is a hotkey, it should be a setting in you're options where you would find you're other worker settings. This was added in (v1.52 patch) if it doesn't show up in you're options, you may need to download the patch again and try reinstalling it.

You may have to wait along time before any updated discs are available. Who knows how long that will be. And Firaxis is working on another patch that is already in the testing stage, so my advice would be to just hang in there and wait. Also go to the tech support forums here and see if you can find any help there.

Question
Is there no limit as to how many National Wonders can be built in an OCC game post 1.52?

.....

Oh btw I'll thank any answer in advance since I don't want to add another post to this thread just for the thank you. So thanks in advance for answering my question.

I don't think there is one. I believe as well as I remember that it launches on the turn after all the parts are completed.

The farms won't neutralize the health penalty, and jungles should just be chopped. But since ill health penalizes you foodwise, the farm helps make up for it. These are the numbers I found, they were prepatch but I don't think they changed. "Forests provide your city with a +0.4 health bonus where floodplains have -0.4 and jungles a -0.25."
Well, actually, with v1.52 forests are +.5 health. The jungle and floodplain unhealth stayed the same, AFAIK. ;)

I just got the new civ game, and i know this sounds stupid, but how do you purchase things in the city, theres nothing to click on

Purchase what?
After building a unit or building, you should get a popup asking you what to build next.

You can change that by clicking on a city to enter the city screen once (or twice for the extended screen). At the bottom you can click whatever you would like to build. (see image: http://wonko.com/images/misc/civ4.jpg)

Meanwhile I am looking for saved games of experienced players, but cannot find them on the forum. Maybe someone has a link to them?

I can win my games on Noble, get a spanking on Prince. Even when I play an awesome game (imo anyway), my score comes nowhere close to what I see in GOTM games for example... so I must be doing something wrong?

Hopefully with those saved games I can detect what I am doing wrong in probably every game I play.
