Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Yah, I found the problem...seems I lost my primary source and the other one was involved in an ongoing trade...I had to start a war to free it up. :goodjob:

If you were giving the iron and the trade was disrupted by the 'outbreak' of war, your rep will take a hit. :(

Next time you beat them down.

Just curious about a few bad maps. I got my game installed (finally) on this comp. I just want to build my empire so I usually increase the incidence of strategic resources. I have just played 4 (small) continents maps without a single horse icon on any of them. Ok, a couple in a row maybe but 4 of them! What might I have done that would turn off horses?

Edit to add that I am playing Iros... yeah who needs horses? :)

What did you increase it to? It is possible it is just bad luck, usually your starting area is missing several resources and you have to trade or conquer them.

I changed to Japan and I have lots of horses now. When increasing it to 180 didn't work, I changed it to 225 - still nothing for Iros but lots for Japan and company.

How do you end a trading embargo peacefully...I did not see it listed under the active treaty link of the domestic advisor screen where you normally end trade agreements...

England milked me for 200 g a turn for many years before I figured out how to end those without starting a war....

Also, once the AI gets pissed off (furious), do they ever chill out again?

thnx

First off, I never sign trade embargoes. I don't see their point.

Second, to do that, you must go into diplomacy with that nation, look down at the bottom, select "Active", and there is a list of all your current deals with that nation. I think if there are 10 turns or less remaining on it, you may cancel peacefully.

Yes, they will chill out, but it takes many turns.

225 should be more than enough for most purposes, you just had a little run of bad luck. You might try scouting more, or even going for an ultra early war with archers to secure some horses, you could also set yourself up for a challenge and try to win with iros with no horses, if all else fails, just start a new game. I find Pangaea maps to have a good distribution of resources and luxes, but this might be personal bias towards pan maps.

these were small continents maps and I had explored my entire continent - nothing nohow

I plan to reduce that number - after I get another Iro game w/ horses

I've found that if I set the appearance ratio to 0 (which is used for a random spread on the map), there is a better distribution of resources than when I set a specific number. You wont have all the resources on your continent, but you wont run into the situation where there is only one or two of a strategic resource on the whole map.

The small map is probably the issue, the resources tend to be distributed oddly on smaller maps I find (since there are so few total to start with). I usually play huge pangaeas, which seem to have resources well distributed.

Keep in mind that the normal frequency settings leave a few civs without each resource, on a small map with only a few of each type, it is not all that surprising that an entire continent might be missing one. It is also historically a.curate, when you think about it, for the Iroquois to be missing horses until the continents trade with each other :p.

Hey everyone! Just wondering, is there a limit to how many armies you can build? In my game, I have the Military Academy in my capital and rushed 5 armies, 5 turns in a row. On the 6th turn i was going to rush my 6th army but "Army" had vanished from the build options. So I could not build more armies. Any thoughts on this?

If you want to be able to build more armies in future games, the number of cities per army can be changed in the editor. Go to the "general settings" in the "rules" section. Look for "cities needed to support an army" in the "various unit abilities" near the top center of the page.

Aha, OK! Time to squeeze in some more cities then.
Just conquer them with your armies. Although armies should be limited, since, as the AI doesn't know how to use them, it's almost like cheating.

Yes, I know - but at Deity I feel like I have to have armies. I'm facing 73 infanteries atm and I'd like to have some armies so I can practice the Funnel of Doom. :)
