Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Thanks for the info. I thought different Civs liked particular forms of government. I read the Romans 'like' Republic for example. I didn't realise the AI cared which type one had.

Yes, they do like certain forms of government. But only if other civs are in that form of government. It raises or lowers their attitude slightly. It is something you can safely forget about. There is absolutely no benefit for you if you are the Romans to be in a Republic -- apart from the usual of course.

This article has something more on it:

AI’s favorite/shunned governments:
-5 Favorite government (only applies if both you and the AI are in this government)
+4 Shunned government (only applies if you are in this government and the AI is not)

What do you mean, the Maya have no UU to speak of? You wouldn't believe the amounts of enslaved barbarian workers you can get with them.

I have already acquired about five of the little buggers in the early stages of the game having objected to Rome marching across my territory with a settler, attracted a declaration of war and bumped off several invaders - all in the early stages. Only problem is, I have also triggered a very early GA. I must say though, I would rather have a legionary, a Cossack or a Man o' War.

In a single game there won't just be that many. And you'll always have to invest into a unit type that you would normally not build or not build much (at least I wouldn't). It can be a nice side-effect, I give you that. But the Javelin Thrower is not going to conquer the world or even just a significant part of it. Or, if he does it is gonna take him a while.

just bought this off steam.. heard its good but theres no tutorials or anythin.. :( i cant find any newbie guides anywhere, am i blind? can someone help me find one

Help will come... no worries there. First Place to look would be CivIII > Overview \ Info Centre. / The FAQ:

You will find these at the top of the page. Just Scroll up.

Even back track through this Sub Forum, lots of handy hints. Try a small map, with a few other civs. It will come eventually.

Bit of reading here,,,,but worth keeping handy on your comp.

I would suggest (as well) that you read through some of the best games.

You can find Training day games
great succession games
&
individual games that show how good players make the game work for them.

Welcome, the game has a long learning curve; are you up for it? Wars will be tempting and you will lose a lot before you win. Expanding your civ with settlers and workers is paramount. Figure out the relationships between food and growth, production shields and building things, and then there is commerce which can get you research, money and help with happiness. Good luck and have fun.

Im going to try and play a random map on Deity level difficulty, any advice for Wonders I should build or techs I should be researching from the start?

Advice: lower the difficulty, you masochist!

Vaney, can you win consistently on Emporer? More power to you.
If I were playing at that level (I'm happy at Emporer- don't want to sweat too much), I'd probably skip great wonders and concentrate on expansion, war readiness unless I wanted a culture victory. I'd research left to right and not top to bottom and if yoy know who your opnent civs are, try to chose a path they don't start on. I'd establish contacts fast and probably run 0% research once I'd learned something I could trade. At the higher levels the AI gets a discount at researching, so it's hard to keep up that way. Building or capturing the Great Library is a viable strategy, but I'm still trying to improve my basic skills.

I have 50 bombers in a city. Is there a way to automate all them at the same time to bomb an enemy city, or do I have to automate one by one?

I believe so. I don't know of any attack all botton. But I wouldn't advise automating bombers. It just leave you without bombers when you need it because they already attacked that turn. Just do it manually.

yes, ctrl + x will order all units of the same time to attack the target (or move, if you're using a stack of workers)

don't use it though, always attack one unit a time

if you're taking heavy losses, then you can't undo them

and if you take the city, you use up a movement point for a lot of units, which could have been used to attack any stray AI units in range

use the wait button as well

when you're in AI territory, you don't get the bonus of roads. you're restricted by your movement points, and attacking takes up one of them

so a knight which attacks has one move left, and if it's already moved, then it's stuck out in the open for a turn if it wins

if you have 50 bombers, spread them out. you only need 12-15 max to redline/kill a city garrison

At this point I’ve probably lost more times than won on Emperor but I just thought it would be fun just to try it on a bit of a more difficult setting. I tend to skip the wonders I don’t need (colossus or oracle for example) and even the Great Library I would rather capture it than build it like you suggested. I like myself a good war game every once in a while, I usually try to expand like mad and make contact, I don’t recall ever having done a cultural victory though. I try for the militaristic wonders like Leonardo’s work shop or Sun Tzu Arts of war. Would for a militaristic game the Greeks be better for this difficulty?

The Great Pyramids are a Wonder you should try to get/build on all except the highest levels, preferably by "winning" a Scientific Great Leader. :)
