Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Yes, in an early Warlord game I played, as China. It was only about the 2nd time I even got the option to build it, IIRC. Boosted me to over 100 spt, as I recall. . . .

I had a deity game in which I built the Ironworks in my 20K capital city, probably allowed for the victory, its in the HOF tables here http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ3/game_info.php?entryID=2726

Today during a normal regent game I encountered these workers while whacking the Mayans. How did they got them? barbarians as far as I know don't build workers.

ok... I just started a game (tiny map) and when I attacked empty Rome - the city was destroyed rather than taken... So what's up with that? Rome was only 3 (4 if you count that way) from my capitol.

It is chance that they happen to be so close. And the city was destroyed because it hadn't even gotten the first cultural expansion.

I thought all they really need is 1 culture, not expansion.

You may be right. Rome was still only 9 tiles and without a defender when I attacked. other times they have at least expanded by the time I get there.

It takes 10 culture points to get the first expansion. If you hit it before turn 10, it will not have expanded.

Can anybody tell me how the cities get ranked for the top 5 cities screen?
Is that size, culture, wonders or anything else?

are strategic resources all spawned on the map from turn 1, and learning the tech only reveal them? Would it be possible to say, start a game, scout and research wheel, locate all the horses, then restart from 4000 BC and the horses will all be in the same positions?

Correct they will be in the same place, if you start all over, a lot of trouble to go to just to find them though.

You could make you own map and then you would know from day 1.

Vmxa. I make most of my own maps, and the ones that I download I normally modify. However, I can never remember where I put everything. I regularly have to cheat and check the editor for where things are.

Sometimes resources can spontaneously appear and disappear, more often disappear for me though. :( I don't know if that is decided from turn one or not?

Insofar as the depletion is determined by the pRNG, yeah it's decided on turn one, but you'd have to play every move the same for it to happen exactly the same, so it's not likely.
Cognitive bias alert: it seems to me that when my resources deplete they are given to a resource-poor rival.

Opies, worth adding that the AI knows in advance where resources they shouldn't see yet will appear. It's a good sign when the AI goes across the continent to settle an otherwise worthless desert or tundra that it'll have oil come the advent of refining.

1) What to do with the workers when they have nothing serious to do? Especially in case that all terrain got improved and railroads are still far in the future. I have no good places to join them and they are eating up my gold.

2) How can I get the pyramids built. I never managed to build them before the AI and generally can build only 1-2 ancient wonders (lighthouse on archipelago and the mausoleum which is often built when I lose the pyramids race), the difficulty is regent.

3)Why the AI always gets a tech lead initially in regent and only in late ancient I cath up with it?

p.s.
It's not right that you lose resourced more often then gain them. I had several lucky games recently in which up to 3 resources relocated to neat mined hills near the core production cities including a case in which the rng decided that I NEED the Ironworks and gave me two Iron in a coal town in 5 turns in mined and roaded hills.

It is hard to know what is going on, but I would wonder how you can have too many for long. I would guess you do not have enough towns at that point. If you were always adding towns, you would not run out of work, as the AI will not have done a good job with their land.

Well I do not try to build it, unless it just a very easy game. You should be able to do it as long as you have a decent town. First have enough wokers to get mines on all tiles that can use one and will be worked.

Second, get to the town as large as you can as soon as you can. Third start a pre, if you know it could be a close race.

I pretty much do not build those either, but if you made a strong city, non capitol, you should be able to start a pre for what ever wonder you are interest in having.

If you use barbs, the AI has two things going. 1) trading 2) techs from huts.

Boo hoo, actually if you took more land, they would end up in your land and not be an issue. All land is going to be mine, so I am not real concerned about that. The depleted resources come fairly late in the game and are just a non issue.
