Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

if you fail to meet any terms of any deals you will destroy your rep and you will never get it back for the rest of the game. it doesn't even matter if it is your fault or not - you gets da blame.

if some Civ is wiped out and your resources were going through a road for that Civ you will lose your rep just as if you had purposely disconnected the resource.

Not quite. If the AI exports resources/luxuries to you, and you do NOT export any luxuries/resources to the AI, and you cut the trade route, the AI suffers the reputation hit. You do not suffer any reputation hit. I and others have basically documented this at length elsewhere.

If you mean Civ III complete, you go to the ini file and add either KeepRes=1 to use your desktop res or
Video Mode=1280
Can be 1024, 1152, 1280, 1600, 1792. Changes the game's resolution to the value specified (instead of the default 1024x768).
Yes. I meant Civ III Complete. Sorry.

What you describe is how I remember it but I can't find any .ini file. I searched the entire drive for Civ*.ini and it only turns up CivIV stuff.

It is called Conquests.ini. It should be in the same folder where the Conquests executable is.

It would be easier to look for file type in details view. It's listed as configuration settings.

There's only 21 files, and yes it's conquests.ini indeed.

Thanks everyone for the help. Here is where Windows 7 puts the file:
C:\Users\david\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests\Conquests.ini Just to make it harder, several of the folders are hidden. No wonder I couldn't find it!

Unfortunately, neither KeepRes nor Video Mode seem to have any effect. :(

Well if it was me, I would uninstall. Reinstall as admin and it would go into Program files x(86). Using that I know that keep res works as I have used it. If my desktop is 19xx, then I use video as the game does not like 19xx and the text is too small for me to read.

You only have an ini, if you have started a game. That is for all version of III.

This sounds reasonable, especially as the folder exists in Program files (x86) but the .ini file is not there. I'll give it a try.

Thanks again everyone.

Hey, if you have CivIII you should install to C:\Games\Civilization III and be done with it.

Complete wants to put itself under Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games. But you have a good point - installing it somewhere else should get around Windows 7 security.

'Wants to'? It should allow you to install it wherever you damn well please, the only issues should be the placing of shortcuts.

No app is allowed to install into program files in Win7, unless it runs as admin. It could be install in any other location, if directed.

Something I've wanted to clarify since I started playing around in Conquests editor (apologies if I'm resurrecting a dead thread)

The unit creation page has an option for a leader to be scientific, but the rule allowing scientific leaders isn't an option on the scenario properties page. Does this mean no scientific leaders will appear at all? And is there a way to have this rule activated?

Are you having problems with the "Allow Scientific Leaders" option being available on the setup screen?

Only if I don't select "Default Rules" in scenario properties in the editor; the option is shown with all the other rules, but isn't selectable.

You may just be duplicating a prior game where Scientic Leaders weren't allowed. Try starting a fresh game of regular C3C, not Civ Content (a scenario). That may refresh the Sci Leader option.

I'm sorry, Ingenery. Re-reading these posts, I may have given you the answer I wanted to give you rather thn the answer you asked for. I may have mis-understood the question. Is the box outlined in red (in the ttachment) what you're speaking of?

Have you restored the rules to default status? That might be a better option.

That has worked insofar as I can select the option when playing the actual scenario, but for scenarios where I have specific rules set, I've always been concerned that there will be no scientific leaders at all (which might be critical, as I like having them around to hurry wonder production). I have noticed the option in the box you highlighted, but if it allows for scientific leaders regardless of the set rules is what I'm trying to figure out.

Yeah. I believe it's one of those hard-coded issues, where no one really knows but Firaxis. I don't like the fact of if you change anything! your game can't get on the Hall of Fame.

I have played self-created scenarios where I know I far ahead of the competion (AI), but I never received a Scientific Leader. Very frustrating, I like them too. Now I just leave default rules on, unless I don't want the Sci Leaders. In my early creating days, I never played with the default rules and if I did, I never selected "Allow Sci Leaders". I was so convinced that the AI was beating me to Wonder completion by 1 or 2 turns by cheating with them. Now I never worry about it.

I guess I can't answer your question... :dunno:
