Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

CivComplete has all three version up-to-date. There is Civ3 "Vanilla", there is Play the World, and there is Conquests. No need to apply any patches.

- PS: I've been reading the manual and it mentions workers can reforest a tile after making an improvement like irrigation. Does a road or forest layer onto the previous irrigation modifier, or does it just replace it?

A forest will replace irrigations and mines. But it won't replace roads and railroads, those will remain.

Should I automate all my workers, or micromanage them? (My friend says automate, but they don't seem to do the best thing always).

The short answer is: Micromanage your workers. Especially in the beginning of the game it is incredibly important to have your workers make the right stuff in the right places.

1.29 is CivIII, 1.27 is PTW and 1.22 is C3C (Conquest). C3C is the one that has 31 nations. PTW has 24 and C3 has 16.

Automated workers is what the AI uses and it is not optimal. Read Crackers Opening moves.

Micromanage, and also play for fun. Do all the creative stuff like a road to nowhere which 200 turns later will give you Coal because you were daring enough, and more.

i've played civ 3 a long time ago. and i liked the game. so i am now looking for some links to where i could download it. could you help me with that? :undecide:

I imagine that download links aren't allowed. You can get the game from Amazon for about $5.

I definitely have to agree with the above sentiment on workers...before they were building roads everywhere; now I save time by having them where I need them only.

This game is too addicting!

If that link's expired then just camp Steam/Amazon, you can get reasonable offers for 10 USD or less.

A quick question about Great Leaders (as opposed to Scientific ones):
What kind of wonders can be rushed with Great Leaders? In my last game, I saved one up for Leonardo's (he was from the first age) and he couldn't rush it. Neither could he rush Smith's.

Great Leader implies C3 or PTW to me. In those games the leader can rush great wonders. In C3C leaders are either Scientific or Military. SGL can rush great wonders and MGL can rush small wonders and some other things.

If the leader was allowed to rush a wonder in that game and it could not I would wonder if the game was a PTW or C3 save loaded in C3C.

If you switch a build to a wonder and tried to rush it with a leader that was allowed to rush it, then I would suspect you had "tainted shields" in the box. IOW short rushed with gold or disbands.

You see this when you chop a tree or disband a unit while making an army and then later switch the build to a wonder and try to use a leader.

Right, I get it now. I was playing C3C but confused the terminology a bit.
I was wondering this because I read the War Academy article on Leaders and the author mentioned rushing The Great Library, which is obviously out of date. I suppose MLs can be only used to rush small wonders then.

Cheers!

MGL's can also rush some structures and of course make an army. In a bind I have used MGL to rush an expensive structure like a cath and then switch that to a unit. That could be an exploit, however the AI gets use MGL to rush great wonders, so it seem a fair trade. Not that it comes up enough to matter.

I recently got this game and started playing Conquest. I want to stop open borders and change my trades but can't figure it out. I read the FAQs. When I click on the trade in the active list, nothing happens. This is a great game, but it didn't have a manual so I'm just muddling around. Please help...

Hey, not sure what exactly you're asking but I'll give this a go:
1) Open boarders? As in enemy units entering your land? You cannot actually stop them from doing so (unless you use your own units to block off the square, this is great for choke points, but those are rare).
If an enemy unit does enter your land, open the diplomacy tab for that civ and pick the option "Your troops are on our land, blabla." The AI will say that they will remove them immediately.
If they do not leave, you can threaten them the following round "Remove your troops or prepare war." The AI will then either declare war or all of his units will be removed from your land automatically (it doesn't matter how deep in your territory they are).

On the side, it would be a good idea to get used to shortcuts / hotkeys.
You can access Diplomacy by:
a) Right-clicking on an enemy unit and saying "Take me to your leader" or whatever
b) Clicking the little D button on the side of the tab in the bottom right (shortcut SHIFT+D)
c) Pressing F4

As for telling enemy units to leave or declare war, you have to be careful, especially at higher difficulties. It's a good idea to know how your army ranks against that of the enemy, keep checking this every once in a while under the F3 tab. If theirs is considered stronger, it typically means that they have more units and or lots of offensive units (defensive units don't count as highly).
You do not want to fight a war unprepared, especially in the early game. In general, keep your wars short and sweet and whenever you do engage, make sure you get allies.

2) As for trading - what kind of trade do you have in mind? The only ones that can be 'cancelled' are those with which you get the warning 'This trade can be peacefully cancelled after 20 turns.'
This includes peace treaties, exchange of resources, gpt deals, mutual protection pacts, right of passage agreements. You can cancel these by going to the trade window and choosing "Active" from the bottom, rather than "New."
You can see which ones you have going on by clicking Details under the F4 menu.

Hope that this answers your questions!

Open borders sounds like Civ 4. What versions are you playing?

As was mention "open borders" is an agreement you can make in Civ4. In civ 3 you sort of always have open borders. IOW the AI will cross your culture borders as long as they think you are weak or if the intent to attack or if they are on their way to attack another civ.

If you know they are at war and th other nation is in the direction they are headed, you can either let them go or tell them to leave. Telling them to leave could lead to declaration of war or they could comply or they could say they will comply and keep going.

If you are strong to them and have no gaps they normally will stay out of your land. Hope that helps. BTW in IV you can end the open borders in the diplomacy screen.

C3C only runs on Windows XP, is there any way it can be made compatible with Windows 7?
Hopefully yours,

Both the Steam and retail versions of Civ III: Complete work flawlessly on both of my Win 7 64bit computers.
Qualifying that - with the retail one, I used to get occasional crashes. The Steam version works like a charm.

I'm sorry. It says Right of Passage. I would like to stop some other trades as well but I can't seem to do it. The trades are from ancient times and I want to re-negotiate. When I go into the diplomacy screen and click on active trades, I try to click the trade I want to change and nothing happens. I must be overlooking the obvious, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out. I had been playing Civ 4 and then I got this game. This game seems harder than Civ 4. I was playing on the Noble level and decided to to try Civ 3. I am barely managing on Warlord level.
