Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

No, it cannot. Hence it gets a star by it in the tab once the elite has generater an MGL and you get a prompt to rename it.

I just loaded Civ III Complete. I have played Civ before, but could battle other countries and even lose a city or two, but this version ends the game if I lose 1 city. Also, if I defeat a foreign city the entire race is wiped out. What gives? Can I set it to last longer???

Thanks Spoonwood. So once an elite unit has created a MGL there no special reason to keep it.

No, you can upgraded it and then become an elite and get another. I have make 3 from a single horse as it went to knight to cav.

Upgrading an elite star can work well. But, an elite star still has 5 possible hitpoints. So, I usually like to have an elite star become the lead unit of my new army.

A 4 *elite army is as good as it gets, so I hang on to *elites. I will upgrade them if possible, just for good luck, but they usually join the army they created. Sometimes, I will have several guerillas that are upgraded from *elite archers that became longbow *elites.

EDIT: I went back and looked at the original question. A *elite can only generate another leader if it is upgraded and becomes a normal elite. I'm sure it is my imagination, but it just seems that leader generating unts are lucky.

I'm a newbie girl.
I want to play a small map, chieftain level, spaceship victory, as the Maya.
Any tips or strategies for success?:)

Does pop-rushing cause unhappiness in only in the city you hurried production or does it effect your other cities as well? How long does the unhappiness last?

The note I have is that one content person becomes unhappy for 20 turns. AFAIK, the unhappiness would only spillover to another city if you raze/abandon the pop-rushed city. :)

Welcome to CFC!

I don't play for spaceship victories very often, so I stand to be corrected on this, but my guess is that at chieftain, the biggest problem that you might run into is time. Frequently trading techs (or even giving them away) may be necessary. Otherwise, you'll have to research the entire tech tree by yourself before time runs out.

I am wondering why you would not choose a Scientific Civ for a Scientific race?

The Mayans do breed like rabbits so you get lots of cities (with any luck at all) so that will help but I don't think it would make up for just the free techs a Sci would give.

I can answer that: Because I suggested the Mayans!!......My fault! (I have a Love Affair with them on Histographic games!).........But I did "partially-recover" by suggesting she use Germany/Babylon/Russia as opponents (all scientific).........And she did get all 3 Free techs at the end of the Ancient Age! ;)

BTW, there are slots open in the HOF at Chieftain & Spaceship, so she's having a "go"! :)

My recommendation is also a Scientific Civilization such as Greece, and probably on a continents map, 60% water, with maybe two or three opponents, so you have time to learn the game mechanics without being immediately pounced on. Having played a lot of Spaceship victory games, doing all of your own research is a bit tough in the standard game, so if you can get any techs from the AI, it is helpful. Three opponents should also give you an adequate supply of the strategic resources that you will need.

You'll probably get a more definitive answer in the Civ III general forum, but it sounds like you're playing a scenario.

On Chieftain techs barely cost a penny. I don't see how time to research all the techs would become a problem even for a newbie, given that she tried to crank up the science slider as much as possible.

With regard to Lisa's query, I'll first say I've played this game a while, so what I might consider "obvious" probably won't come as obvious for you. Having said that as quick beginner's advice I'll say...

1. Look around the forum, there's plenty of good info.
2. Train plenty of settlers and workers.
3. Build plenty of roads.
4. Build plenty of libraries, universities, and research labs.
5. Raise the science slider as high as possible as much as possible.
6. Check the civilopedia often, especially for resources you need to launch the ship.

To add what Spoonwood said, remember that the minimum amount of time taken to research a tech is 4 turns so don't try to get them even faster. :)
