Thanks Grille. I do remember getting a wonder once by sabotaging it's production in an enemy capital.

In order for me to offer a Military Alliance, what are the pre-requisites? :)

An embassy
Thanks for the answers punkbass2000, Tearor & Grille.

BUT, I still couldn't OFFER a Military Alliance!.....what was I missing?

Then, I figured it out: The "Good" Civ I offered the MA to did not KNOW the "Bad" Civ I was at war with!

So, I donated one of my cities to the "Good" Civ, which was situated next to a "Bad" Civ's unit and voila, MA appeared on the F4 screen next turn! (viz. After they got to know each other!) :)

EMan,

That could be used as an exploit, sort of. Since Contact and Map Trading were pushed back in Conquests, you shouldn't be able to know who has what contact, but you sort of can.

@Ginger_Ale: You can tell if the Civ has contact from the F4 screen, providing you have an Embassy with that Civ OR the other Civ involved.

(viz. If there's NO contact, there will be NO Red or Blue line connecting the AI Civs!)

Since, to offer an MA, you must have an Embassy with the Civ, I don't see how it could be viewed as an exploit!?.....If it wasn't for the Diplomacy Screen (F4) giving the contact info away, I'd agree with you 100%! ;)

i only suggest an MA if your completely ready for war because on the harder levels the com goes after the player more then the AI.

Or.....if you want to win with a Diplomatic Victory! (viz. UN) ;)

No nitpick, think it's just not stated.;)
Cheers!

Yeah, I know ;) I've just developed a penchant for 10 character posts :D

I should mention that, in addition, your potential ally needs contact with that civ and you almost always need to already be at war with them. You can put the offer on the table without being at war, but they'll almost never accept.

this is because at the less aggression levels that the computer believes that peace for all can be achieved. set the aggression higher.

When I get a wonder like TheoryOfEvolution and get two tech advances, I also get messages saying "CivX has taught us TechA" and "CivY has taught us TechB". These seem to be old techs. Is it possible to turn the TheoryOfEvolution into a 4 tech advance? Is this a case where tech gifts to other Civs might help?

So, questions...

What are these 2 extra techs that other Civs teach us?
Why would you ever give techs to Civs?

I understand some of the ideas behind tech gifting. To shift the balance of power... To guide other Civ research so you have useful tech to get in trade... But, I think there is more to it.

Is there a thread that explains how to download a file to Civ 3? I tried to find one but no luck. I am trying to load Dianthus' utility and I can't find it in my scenarios file in the game.

Never mind I found it

Your question confuses several different subjects:

1. Downloading a file is as simple as clicking on its link. Your browser will probably ask you whether you want to run it or save it. You should say you want to save it, and remember where you told the computer to save it so that you can find it later.

2. If you are looking for Dianthus' utility to download then yuo should use the link in his signature.

3. If you are looking for Dianthus' utility *after* you have downloaded it then you need to remember where you told your browser to save it. It may be in your "My Documents" folder, but it could be elsewhere. Why do you think it should be in your scenarios folder?

4. Dianthus' utility is not a scenario as far as I know. It's a separate application that you download, install and run like any other application. When it's running you tell it to load up a Civ3 file, or monitor a folder or whatever. Look for a link to Dianthus' thread in his signature to find a description of his program.

Sorry Alan.
I have the utility in "My Documents" but I install with the windows installer package then I load..finish...and I still can't seem to find the "actual" utility

Found it!!!

How do I make a save from my Civ 3 game? I see how to upload it but not create the save..

I have a 272k file on the server right now and my machine seems to really laboring to upload it (10 minutes with hour glass). I have a DSL line, pentium 4, XP and 256 RAM. Is this normal?
@AlanH thanks for all your help already!

punkbass, I have a P4 and only 256 RAM (though I want more). It should load fine -> what type of file are you trying to upload Whomp? Some files aren't allowd, but if it's a .SAV, it should work.
