Does anyone else ever get a warning in the Foreign Advisors' screen saying, "maximum hyperlinks exceeded"? I get that at least once a week, and it freezes up the game to the point it sometimes won't even allow me to quit the game. I have to use Ctl-Alt-Del to exit and then reboot my machine.

I have a P4 1.9ghz 512 RAM. It "feels" like a memory problem, but it often happens when I haven't been playing for very long. I know it's not the fastest machine, but it shouldn't be that bad. Ideas anyone???

Do you have the latest patch (you can get them here)? Maximum hyperlinks exceeded means there were too many links to things within the program for it to show them all. (In some mods you'll get this when there are added units and lots of units require a resource like, say Iron, and it can only fit a certain number on the Civilopedia page for iron). When do you get the screen saying that, and do you have a save/screenshot? Is this any modded rules? What version of Civ do you have (expansion pack? original?). More info is needed.

This is using C3C v1.22, originally installed over CIII v1.29, no mods...just epic games on a normal-sized map, no more than 7 AI opponents (usually fewer). I'll try to get a screen shot next time, but I'm usually in sort of a panic state that everything will just crash. I'm not very knowledgable about how computers work. I've never uploaded a screen shot here before either, so we shall see.

The message is in a tiny box, (1" wide x 3/4" high, with an "ok" button and an "x" to close...except that when I click the "x" or "ok", it immediately reappears) silver-colored like one generated by IE (like the scroll bars on this site), rather than anything generated by the game itself.

Thank you for your speedy response. :)

@GingerAle
OK, I hit "print screen". We'll see if I can get it to show up.

Edit to add that it's not usually this large in-game. My usual desktop setting are 800x600.

hi gmaharriet!

Just a thought... is it possible that the weird error box isn't caused by something else? Say a pesky spyware / adware you got pestered with while surfing the net with Internet Exploder? Last time i got some of that crap in my pc i had similar problems... strange popups and Warcraft3 freezing to death.

The problem was solved after a good f-prot scan (and successive cleanup). I also ditched M$ Exploder and switched to Mozilla... and i got no more crapware infecting my pc for over a year.

Oh, tR1cKy, I think you may have just solved it. :goodjob: I read your reply, ran SpyBot Search and Destroy, got rid of all the spyware, and went back into my game. No more error messages. Thank you! Thank you! I'll have to remember to run that more often. :D

There's something in the utility forum that looks like it might do this. Take a look at Play all english and german scenarios with german civ3. Post #15 seems to be a French version of the utility. Good luck!

Thanks Dianthus, seems like that's exactly what I was looking for! :goodjob: I'll test it tonight.

I wasn't feeling good at the perspective to manually copy and rename all units one by one...

Glad to see it's working well, I thought it was odd that you got it on the Foreign Advisor screen, where it doesn't appear (It will never appear in the main, unmodded game!). :goodjob:

Hey everyone,

I've got a couple quick questions for you. I was wondering what the effect of having troops fortified in your city (besides defense). Do troops in cities lower corruption or raise happiness at all?

Also, if they do, does it matter if the troops are upgraded or is an old fashioned warrior just as effective as infantry?

Thanks once again!!

Corruption no, happiness yes, depending on your government. (Up to two troops per city will make unhappy citizens content under despotism and three under monarchy. Can't remember for fascism, feudalism or communism, but it should be in the civilopedia. There's no military police effect in Republic or Democracy -- the city may as well stand empty if it doesn't need to be defended.) Warriors are just as good as infantry (or cavalry, or spearmen, or tanks) as military police. Ships, bombardment units, explorers, scouts, and non-military units do not count toward the military police total.

Renata

Just to add to what Renata said, Feudalism has 3 troops per city making citizens content (called Military Police, or MP), and Communism and Facism have 4.

What is the formula for calculating how expensive it is to establish an embassy? I'm currently playing on a massive map (ElMencey's 362x362) w/ 31 civs, and some of the establishment fees seem exorbitant. Is distance from my capital an issue? Number of civs? Number of years/turns I've known said civ?

hi Civers

I have a question regarding the visibility of units defending a city ... I guess that this also relates to Stacks ... and transported as well ... oh and Army ... this pertains to a pbem environment ...

CMIIAW (Correct me if i am wrong ... havn't seen this one so i translate) ... with the following

A. Foreign City
1>Spearman and many modern non-defensive ground units ... graphic icon shows spearmen as the defender?
2>Spearman and many modern defensive ground units ... graphic icon shows modern unit as the defender?
3>Swordsman and many modern non-defensive ground units ... graphic icon shows modern unit as the defender?
4>Swordsman and many modern defensive ground units ... graphic icon shows modern unit as the defender?
5>Right-click on City and the window allows civilopedia enteries to be viewed ... Are all the unit types inside City listed for Civilopedia viewing?
6>Does fortify of unit in the City have any relivance to the above query?

B. Foreign Stack
5>Right-click on the Stack and the window allows civilopedia enteries to be viewed ... Are all the unit types in the Stack listed for Civilopedia viewing?
6>Does fortify of unit in the Stack have any relivance to the above query?

C. Foreign Transport
5>Right-click on Transporter unit and the window allows civilopedia enteries to be viewed ... Are all the unit types being transported listed for Civilopedia viewing?

D. Foreign Army
1>Right-click on Army and the window allows civilopedia enteries to be viewed ... Are all the unit types making up the Army listed for Civilopedia viewing?

I have numbered the questions for easy reference ... might be easy to answer with Yes/No/Don't Know

Thanks Guyz :goodjob:

A: the unit with the highest modified defense will be visible. Fortify have effect since it increases defense by 25%. Your information will be as if they only had that single unit in the city.

B: top unit visible as in A. In stacks, however you will be able to view whats underneath the visible unit.

C: only the transport is visible and there is no way to tell what's inside

D: If it's in a city you will not be able to see whats in the army. If it's in the open you will be able to.

Addendum: IIRC, if there are 2+ different units with the same defensive value & hit points (i.e. Warrior & Horseman), the unit with the least offensive value will be the visible unit. (viz. Top Defender) Applies to you or the AI.

So, a Warrior will take "defensive preference" over a Horseman. ;)

will my rep be ruined if I have an alliance with civA against civB and I attack civA (the one I have a MA with against civB?
