I can't guarantee this, but I'm pretty sure from what I've seen around here before that clearing a terrain type will NOT affect the future occurence of resources there. To the best of my knowledge, the resources are all 'set' at map creation, so square X,Y would already be designated to get rubber regardless of what its terrain type may be by the time you learn replaceable parts. Like I said, I'm not 100% positive on that, but I'm reasonably confident that it is the case.

No. The Rubber will appear, whether the jungle is still there or not. The place were resources are located is fixed from the start, from way back in 4000BC. :)

edit: OK, so I took to long to post this...

Should I ever avoid trading tech or resources with the AI in order to "stay ahead" of them? I seem to research ahead of them (on Regent) and am always wondering if I should trade it or not. I currently do, but that question is always in the back of my mind, like I am doing them a favor that will come back to haunt me.

I trade if I can get a good deal. The times I'll wait is (a) the AI has nothing to offer (ie; a world map and 10 gold), (b) I'm building an important wonder that comes from that technology, or (c) that tech gives an important unit (ie; tanks are superior in the Industrial Age.)

I tend not to trade resources (I do trade luxury resources, though), because it gives the AI better units. For example, oil in the Industrial and Modern Ages is a big mistake, because then the AI can get better units, rather than me taking them out.

Welcome to the forums. :)

I have that problem too. I think a lot of the better players than I will say to trade as much as is reasonable, but I personally can't help but think of it as helping out my opponent as well.

Ideally, if you can sell a tech to multiple civs (be sure to do it on the same turn, so the AI's don't sell it to each other), you're pretty clearly the winner. Even if it's just a trade between yourself and one other civ though, I suppose the way to view it is that you're hooking up each other moreso than the remaining civs anyway. Regardless though, I still hoard techs like steam engines or industrialization rather than let the AI get to them any more quickly. Middle ages I usually try to make any trades that are reasonably fair.

Thanks for the welcome and for the tips. What is the best way to find out what a tech or lux is worth? Is it a multiple (or fraction?) of my research cost in shields? I have read that the value goes down once more civs gain the tech.

@AZSportsFan. Welcome [party] and I say Bear Down Wildcat!!! I think it depends on the AI strength. If it's to a weak AI they may research a path that I don't and then we can trade more for lux tech etc.

If it's a strong AI or neighbor maybe only techs that can't help them. Techs that don't give any big benefit like markets, banks military, wonders I want etc. This AI will be my competition in the end. Not the weak one.

You can't find out how much a luxury is worth (it changes value depending on how many happy faces it will create -- so larger civilizations, and civilizations with marketplaces will pay more for it), but you can find out how much a tech is worth by using GreyFox's Tech Calculator (it works for plain civ, and PTW and C3C, the two expansions).

Great, I'll check it out. Right now I am going through the stock conquests in C3C. Persians are tough in Rise of Rome! I am enjoying the conquests as each one seems to require a different strategy. Build up civ, early attack, solo, alliance, etc. I am new to Civ (bought Complete in Dec.) and am hooked (i.e. no sleep) and I enjoyed my only other turn-based experience (Fallout and its sequel). I have more experience with RTS, however.

BTW, this forum is great, and I've appreciated hanging out here - silently - for the past month.

:king: :king: :king: :king: :king: :king: :king: :king: :king: I have never played the conquest  but, I am sure that you just made a very good statement.

How do you know how much gold you have invested to some point? Or even how many turns since you starting researching the tech? Is that information anywhere, other than taking notes?

Seems like you're now a fanatic AZSportsFan! :)

On the F1 screen, by the sliders, you can see how many beakers (or 'gold') is invested in science. About the turns, you manually have to count (or know what the # of turns was when you started - # of turns left).

dannergreg, those are called avatars. If you want a standard one, you can get there from your Avatar page. You can get custom ones when you have 30 posts and you've been registered for 30 days. So make a post a day and you'll be there. :) (You can set them in your Avatar page.)

I am noit realy a chieftan. I am really a struggling warlord but i do not know  how to change the thing under my name. is that another aztar thing?????

Sparta: One more thing on trading, sometimes you can trade them something that can't help them, like education to the holder of the Great Library or a new government tech to someone who's at war or who is racing to beat you to a wonder. Trading Communism to an AI who's ahead of you in tech and at war with another AI, will cause him to revolt to Commie. If he was in Republic or Demo, you've probably slowed down his research a whole lot. Also there are times when you want an AI to have a tech. Like a weak neighbor who you trade masonry to is likely to start the Pyramids, which you can then take from them later.

Yes Dannergreg it is something you must wait for. Now behave.

Top of the page is a link 'user cp'.
In there, click 'edit profile' to the left, put in a 'custom user title' and 'save changes' :)

Also, there's no need to get upset for not getting an answer soon enough, people will eventually answer :)

I knew about the sliders, and I change them often while researching after checking if a lowel level will finish researching in the same amount of turns. I guess I would need to manually track gold invested by adding in research after every turn. This of course changes every turn (or potentially) due to the otherwise increasing or decreasing economy of which a percentage is being sliced off for research funding.

No harm Brah. I didn't want to see you get :spank: by the moderators so early on.

Mistfit did my avatar and the people there are great help in making avatars. Here's the link.
