You fixed it Lad! It had been too long since I even thought of preferences... Once again, Thank You!

I've been playing C3C for a while but always under the security of Chieften but now I'm trying to improve my game. Could someone tell me what the bad points of Fascism is? I've always just gone for Democracy (because I never really knew about unit support etc ¬_¬)

Basically I have 35 cities as it stands and Monarchy creates a lot of corruption so I'm looking for a new government type (Republic would give about 25g/turn support costs) and it's a toss up between Communism/Fascism. Although I've only just got to Gunpowder so it's a while away.

Some things I don't understand about Fascism which probably means it's not as great as I think it is:
It says that I lose population points when I switch. Does this mean people get killed off :O?
'Newly conquered cities lose population and do not generate culture until a popular majority has been assimilitated'- So I guess cities I capture lose a person, does this mean if it would have 1 person, it is instead destroyed? And what does that culture thing mean?

Also if someone could just suggest the best general government for a Greek Civ (not much into war and I've used Democracy almost exclusivley in the past)

Facism is really bad - let the AI self-destruct in it. It is "Xenophobic" meaning that when you revolt into Facism, metropolises (size 13+) lose 3 population points, cities (size 7-12) lose 2 population points, and towns lose 1 population point.

Cities that you conquer won't start to produce culture (the thing that expands your borders - like temples, libraries) until the majority of the citizens in the city are of your nationality (say you have a city with 2 Zulu citizens and 1 Greek citizen (that's you). It has to grow 2 more Greek citizens before it'll produce culture).

For Greek, a Commercial and Scientific Civ, the best government is Republic. For 95% of games, Republic is the best government - the 'trade bonus' it gets (each tile that produces at least 1 gold produces and extra) can essentially double your income early in the game. Although it has war weariness (albeit low), it shouldn't affect you much - if it does, just raise the luxury slider (by the science slider on the F1 screen) to combat it.

Communism is very powerful in C3C if you have lots of courthouses / police stations and you build the Forbidden Palace and Secret Police Headquarters - if you have lots of cities, and expect lots of war, Communism can be useful. If you are relatively peaceful (including some warring, that's ok), Republic is your best bet - just don't have too much of a useless standing army.

Welcome to CFC karn131, I hope you learn lots while you're here!

Thanks for the tips, Fascism doesn't sound too good anymore to me really. Too many tradeoffs for the benefits.

I had actually switched to Republic after making my post to see what it was like but I'm a bit confused about something. Namely the word nuisance.

To me a nuisance could be a little fly buzzing around your head (not much) or a little kid kicking you in the balls (a lot). Basically what I don't get is it seems switching to Republic increased income (which would suggest less corruption) gut my city building the forgotten palace went from 27 turns to complete to 36 (both with we love the king day)

It takes a bit of practice to know just when to revolt to Republic. You need your road network set up and not too many units. If I get to Republic early through some good trading, sometimes I'll wait and research a tech like Currency and build a marketplace or two before revolting. If you do it too soon, you actually can lose money, but in the long run of the game, I think it's the best government.

I'm confused now... I've only played Conquests a couple of times, been on unpatched vanilla all the time before that... and Democracy was always the best government. Is that now not so? If so, what on earth is the point of having a government available at the end of the medieval era which is WORSE than one at the end of the ancient era???

In a straight comparison of features:

Unit Support: Republic 1/town, 3/city, 4/metro, 2gpt above the limit; Democracy: no free support, 1gpt per unit.

Republic wins hands down, especially once you get 30-40 CITIES (size 7+). With no MPs, chances are you'll be paying very little to support your army - and the break-even point with Democracy is going to be very, very, high.

Corruption: Democracy just edges out Republic - but only just. It's hardly noticable.

Worker Rate: Democracy gets a 50% bonus to the Worker rate, so wins this round easily.

War Weariness: Republic has much more manageable WW than Democracy, so Republic wins this one.

Commerce Bonus: Both get the same bonus, so a draw.

Availability: To be able to research Republic, you don't need to research any useless techs, you can sometimes get it for free, and it's available ver early in the game (if you pull of a successful slingshot, nearly always before 1000BC). Democracy has to be researched, you need a useless tech to get to it (Printing Press), and comes along quite late in the game. The big killer, of course, is that unless you're a Religious Civ, revolting to Democracy takes up another x turns of Anarchy.

Republic wins 3-2 (and the 2 points for Democracy, namely corruption and worker rate, really are the most minor aspects).

Its a fair agument that but i find that Democracey edges it. Ive never had any issue with war weariness in my games and the extra commerce i find makes a big difference especially with the rush building of stuff. A few extra commerce makes alot of difference when you have alot of cities. I always find gams in which i use Democracey i do best in. However im in the minority it would seem with this belief, it just suits my style best.

Let's quote DocT from a thread on governments on page two:

It's only the (much less important) distance corruption where Democracy gets a 25% bonus.
But distance corruption really doesn't matter with CxxC spacing - while it is noticable for OCP.

And who tends to use OCP? Players on low to mid levels. Of course, they'll notice a difference if they'd build their pattern with Republic instead.
However, OCP won't work above Emperor anyway.

So unless you have your cities spaced out a lot, it won't improve much - but you'll end up with most likely higher unit support costs, more war weariness. The higher the level, the less useful it is.

may i be nosey and enquire as to what 'ocp' stands for?

Optimal city placement.

Optimal City Placement; You lay out your city grid such that minimal tile-sharing occurs in the 21-tile radii. It "wastes" a lot of squares before your cities can have pop>12.

edit: Sheesh! faar to slow. I blame the bolding!

wow, 3 responces in 1 minute!!! very very effiecient ;-). Thank you for you're wisdom.

Did you think "quick answers" was just a cute name? :p A lot of people watch this thread continually.....

How do you cancel trades? I'm trading gems (from the Maya) for my Saltpeter cos I had an extra colony giving me some. But now the Aztecs plonked a city on it so now have no saltpeter and cant figure out how to cancel this trade with tha maya. I'm pretty much a peaceful Civ (only had a very long cold war when a lone warrior took one of my unprotected citys) and one tech away from replacement parts but it's the principal of the thing :P

Open diplomatic screen. On the bottom is a link for active deals. Click on the deal you want to renegotiate and it will end up back in the new deal trade screen. If there is a number after the deal (##) it means it is still within the 1st 20 turns of the deal and cannot be renegotiated.

Hi, um. Does anyone know a program that lets you easily arrange the techs on a techtree for biqs? I found one for bics, but that's worthless since I'm making a scenario on a biq.

I'd ask that question in the Creation & Customization subforum. They'd know the answer better there.

This one is about installing mods... Like Warhammer mod for example... Will I still be able to play original/Conquest after I install it? And is it possible to have more than one mod installed?
