Yes, I get that, but this was in a game where the continent only had me and two other tribes on them. That's still a lot.

I was on a continent with just two other tribes in that particular instance, I know how to trade, my point stands :P

Perhaps your problem is not so much researching, as it is producing gold to PAY for the research. ;) My first tech rarely costs more than 32 turns to research (on Conquests), and by the time I am starting my second, the time is usually 20 turns, or less. This is with my Science slider set somewhere between 50 and 70 percent (still making at least 1gpt).

Some techs, particularly Republic, are much more expensive than others, so if you have low income, they will take longer to research.

Some "shooting" units can "fire back" when you attack them or pass them by, for exapmle cavalry or tank. What is the probability of this "fire back" or they always shoot? Do archers have this ability?

Another question. I heard that spearmen have better defence chance when attacked by horseman than by archer. Is that right? Do pikemen have the same defence bonus vs knight (comparing to MI)? Are there any other "special" attack or defence bonuses?

I don't really recall the probabilites, but this is called "Zone of Control." You can read more in the ingame Civilopedia under Game Concepts unless someone posts further information.

There's no special defense bonus for e.g. pike vs mounted unit.
So knight vs pike should win at same odds as MI vs pike. (Surely, the knight *could* retreat, so if you run a test with a sample of 1000 fights, you'd probably use less knights than MIs due to retreat ability - but that's a different matter.)

Some Firaxian confirmed a while ago that there is no such bonus in civ3. I guess the bonus speculation followed from civ2 rules.

You were mis-informed. That is not true in Civ3. No units have a bonus against any other unit.

Now, it is true that a spearman will be more likely to survive a single attack by a horseman than by an archer, but that's because there are 3 results when the horseman attacks (horse kills spear, spear kills horse, horse retreats) and only 2 for archer attacking spear (archer kills spear, spear kills archer). The "horse retreats" result removes some times when the horse would kill the spear (and so an archer does). But this is a somewhat subtle point and not probably what you were thinking (or what you were told).

Has anyone tried moving zero-movement units with railroads-- since they don't require movement?

Probely a simple answer but what is the most effective way of getting rid of its too crowded unhappiness?

most effective in early game:
use lux slider

most effective in general:
aquire all sorts of lux resources and build markets
apart from that:
build usual stuff like temples, cathedrals etc, build/capture Bach's etc

Well, you could always build Workers and Settlers, that would "uncrowd" the city.... :mischief:

If that's not a viable method, for whatever reason, for productive, *core* cities, bump up the Luxuriy Tax.

For distant, corrupt cities, it is often cheaper to hire an Entertainer for the city.

Other things that help:

Connect/trade for Luxuries. The more Luxes you have, the happier your people.

If you have at least 3 Luxuries available to the city, make sure you have a Marketplace, because of its "Happy-Face-Multiplier" effects on luxes.

Build "Happy-Making" improvements: Temple, Cathedral, Colesseum, certain Wonders, like Bachs, Sistine, etc.

How can you change the music to your own mp3's ?

Is it even possible , if it is I'd like to put my own music in for the in game music and the menu music , if anyone can tell me what folders I need to put things in , or what I need to change any filenames to I'd appreciate it.

Thanks ahead of time.

Does future tech actually do anything? Does it give you new units or city improvements? I was on FT3 and I hadent noticed any changes.

WELCOME TO CFC! :band:
Yes, you can put your own music into CivIII. If you go into the Sounds subfolder of the installation directory, you'll find the various sound files in those folders. The trick is that you have to rename the MP3's you insert to the original file names, so backing up the original files is highly recommended.

Since this restrains you to a limited number of tracks, most of us just disable the music under preferences and play WinAmp in the background.

No, there are no new resources, improvements, abilities, units or wonders given by FutureTech. All it does is boost your score, but by less than a point per tech. Scorewise, it's usually better to abandon research and use your money to jack up the luxury slider to increase happy citizens...

EDIT: Crosspost with MadScot.

Just curious.. :)

Funny question.:)
I remember these:
Aztecs
Germans
English
Americans
Zulus
Mongols
French
Egyptians
Russians
Romans
Greeks
Chinese

probably more, maybe look/ask in the civ1 forum

edit: or look here.
I forgot Indians and Babylonians (should be 14 civs for 'colour reasons' anyways)
