When you switch techs (whilst in mid-research), then you do not carry over any beakers from the research of that technology. You effectively start from scrap on yer new one. But you can go back to the tech you changed from later on, and you'll still be at the same place in research that you left off on :)
Sorry, this is wrong. :(

If you switch research and leave the Science Advisor screen (F6) you lose all the beakers you have already put in. They do not come back when you switch the tech back.

 Was this changed in any patches from Civ 3 1.04 ---> C3C 1.13? I remember doing some sort of a test, which came out with what I said... Maybe I was just dreaming ;)

Is there any one place/thread/document that has all the known formulas of the game (e.g. corruption, culture flipping, tech cost, etc)?

Here's a collection of funky links to threads containing formulas etc:

You can find more stuff in the Strategy Articles section or Utilities Subforum.

How is "possession" of a given square calculated? I would guess that distance to closest city and relative culture is involved somehow, but how can you predict when a city will be able to "steal" some squares away from a rival?

I found this, but I still can't keep up with all these abbreviations. http://www.civfanatics.com/doc/civ3/Civ3_jargons.txt, which makes understanding a lot of the war academy very difficult. Could someone fill me in on the following which are not in the above linked jargons.txt?

FP
RCP

and lastly, can someone point me in the direction to an explanation of what ICS (infinite city span) is?

If you need these in context, I got these from the corruption thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62851
Search has been disabled, so hopefully someone can help.

FP = Forbidden Palace

RCP = Ring City Placement. This is an exploitive method of building your cities to minimize corruption. Conquests includes a "fix" for this.

ICS = Infinite City Sprawl/Span/any other "S" word you want. This is a city placement method of placing cities very close together, usually only with one empty tile between. It is also considered somewhat exploitive.

Quick question: I have just installed Civ3 on my flatmate's computer, all good. The problem is that i can't make all the units move by pressing 'J' like I can on my computer, also, when I right click on a city, it doesn't ask me if I want to 'wake all' or 'fortify all' my units. Any ideas of what I need to change to allow this?

Sounds like you haven't patched the game.
Version number is stated in the bottom left corner on the first screen appearing after that intro movie. Make sure it's 1.29.;)

Probably not, I'm not smart enough to think of that. Do I have to have the computer hooked up to the net to patch it?

I have a newb question regarding overall gameplay. What is the purpose for having all civs need to scientifically research government types? For example, democracy is a basic form of self government that was probably used in by some primitive tribes somewhere. I understand that certain governments were a result of certain eras (ie. socialism and the industrial age), but still why do we need to waste time researching these things.

I suppose you could think of it as them creating a new set of laws which are applicable to that type of goverment, this would take time - represented by the time to research the tech.

I understand that certain governments were a result of certain eras (ie. socialism and the industrial age

And that would explain why you don't get the opportunity to research 'em till later in the game...

That's not really a newbie question btw, it's quite logical-ish :)

Anyhoo welcome to CFC.

I looked at the period of anarchy as the time during which we are making the laws for the new government. I guess my real gripe is that I want to be able to have democracy earlier in the game and not have to research it. The way this game treats governments, I am usually pretty close to the industrial age before I have democracy as an option.

Which files does the patches mess around with when updating? I'm going to update C3C to 1.12-1.13 but i want to know what files i should backup if i don´t like the changes. Is it the .exe and .bic files only?

That may depend, because there's also occasional changes to the Civilopedia. Is that a .bic file?

I know you're looking for a targeted back up of files, but the "dumb" version of backup I do is just copy and paste the whole install folder somewhere else on the hard drive.

Not really a specific answer to your question, but it's food for thought if you have the space...

If you patch from v1.00 to v1.12, you only need to back-up all files (not folders) in .../Civ3-root-directory/Conquests/ and the folder "Text" which is in the same directory. Make a copy of thoses files and the Text folder before and after patching. You're able to switch version numbers by putting the respective files (and that "Text" folder) back to the default place.

I *guess* it's pretty much the same when you install the patch v1.13 (note: you must have the 1.12-version files in .../Conquests to be able patch to 1.13).
However, I would test-check if files in other directories are affected by the 1.13 patch installation - just to make sure.

If you have enough HD space, follow superslug's advice (i.e. multible installations). After all, that way is more convenient - no need to copy files before starting.

I have C3C in Italian. Do you know of any problem in installng patches (1.02, 1.12, 1.13 or even 1.15)?
What are the correct steps (except for the obvious backups)?

Thanks
